You should also check ATM money. We received 3 10,00 clp notes from a Santander atm that were bogus.

No luck in getting the bank to refund them. Bogus notes don't have a facial image that appears in the background.

Wow, I've been here more than 12 years, live from cash dispensed via ATMs and have never received a bogus bill. Also have never received one in change. Sounds like the "discovery" was "made" when a sleazy vendor gave them back to you saying they were fake.

For cabs, one should always have a stash of smaller bills (5,000 and 1,000) to pay.

I've seen a couple of fakes and these are usually on display by the commercial establishment who received it without detection (most likely a careless or distracted employee).

Besides the visual features, all real bills have a raised textures which you can feel between thumb and forefinger. Also, the ink color will transfer to a white piece of paper when rubbed hard against it.

Yes, never had a problem. I agree that it is the person who hands the bill back who is at fault and not the ATM. Also, we seem to be talking about one taxi driver and not in the plural. It certainly isn't a common problem here and counterfeits are a lot harder to produce because of the quality of the bills. Smaller bills are the way to go with taxis.

Adding my two cents. Never had a problem in 40 years not from taxi drivers and certainly never from an ATM. Chilean banknotes are very difficult to counterfeit.
