That's is almost a difficult question to answer, given the amazing range of good restaurants in and around Almancil.

My personal favourite, which gives good value for money and unfailingly high standards is A Quinta, on the bend up the hill to Vale Formoso, towards Loulé. The ingredients are first class, the cooking totally reliable and service faultless. It is not 'haute cuisine', in that the food is simply prepared - if you want fancy food at decent prices go to Casa Velha - but it's not surprising that you have to book up A Quinta well in advance, it is so well appreciated by residents and holidaymakers alike.

Our friends have recommended 'The Vaults' for Sunday lunch, we haven't tried it yet. That's on the main road near the pharmacy. 'O Figueiral', just off the main Rd at Sitio do Figueiral is good and serves a wonderful beef 'picanha', a Brazilian-style rotisserie beef.

When you say 'in Almancil' do you mean only in the town? If you tell me your location, budget and the type of food you enjoy, I will come up with some further recommendations.

Thanks Ms Moggy for taking time out to reply. We are staying at hotel El pinus (not sure of the spelling, and certainly didn't want to get it too wrong)in Almancil, I think. Do you know anywhere close by to eat?

Dear Jackie,

I think you are staying at the Pinus Ria hotel, which is south of Almancil on the Quinta do Lago - Vale do Lobo Road. Great name, isn't it? Anyhow, you are perfectly situated for good eating in all price brackets. You are walking distance (dangerous road, though!) from a fantastic Italian restaurant / pizzeria called Pizza Pasta Fantasia in Bugainvilea Plaza, it is great and consistently good. There's also a pizzeria, San Marco, in Quinta Shopping. There are several rather pricey restaurants there, but we use 'Deliti' for lunch, and their 'prato do dia' or dish of the day is always good value. 'Chez Antoinne', opposite the shopping centres has a good reputation.

For authentic good Portuguese food try the new table d'hote menu at Casa do Lago on the lake. Three courses for €28 and great quality in a fab setting. Be careful about ordering a la carte as that can be pricey. Drinking beer instead of wine with your meal will keep the price down, too.

If you go out of the hotel and turn right and take either the first or second turning to Almancil you will see many good restaurants at varying prices. Just stop outside and look at the menus. In Almancil itself you sacrifice the lovely surroundings of the resorts but this is often reflected in the prices. Many restaurants here offer good 'business lunch' menus. Don't judge a book by its cover; sometimes the simplest places serve good food.

'Flor do Algarve' on the second road has fabulous value fixed price menus and the food is good. If you go towards the Ria Park Hotel but go past it to the beach you will find a group of great beach bars, the best known of which is Julia's. Follow the signs.

Of course, if you do want to splash out on Michelin starred food, there's San Gabriel along the road from you. Remember that food of that standard will cost you less in Portugal than it will in the UK!

Bom Apétit!

Fantastic reply - just what I was looking for. You know your stuff about portugal. I will try out some of the places you mentioned, thank you very much.

I went to Gale a couple of years ago and there was a fabulous beach bar there, I think it belonged to Vila Joya. It was designed like a bedouin tent, with huge cream bean bags, decking etc. We were told that it had to be removed due to fire regulations, such a shame because it was great.

You don't by any chance know of this place and has it been taken down?

Thanks

Jackie

Just back after a week in that area. I recommend Chez Antoine on the main road as mentioned above. Really nice atmosphere with friendly staff. Food was excellent and not too pricey compared to other restaurants in this area.

We also liked O Tanque on the main road in Figueral. Not the prettiest of restaurants but food was really good.

We had some children with us (we were a party of 13 in total) and went to Joe's as it had a recommendation in a magazine! Don't go there! Our greeting by the ?owner was "Make sure you book if you are coming again!" There was about 2 people there and it remained empty all night! The guy was a total jerk! Food was frozen crap too! Customer service was not his strong point.

It is 'survival of the fittest' at the moment, and a few intelligent restauranteurs have reduced prices a little. I'm going back in less than two weeks' time and will be holding my breath to see who is left standing. Unfortunately business has been so good over the past few years there are greedy landlords out there too, so it's a shame if they don't reduce the overheads for the struggling restaurants.

I'm here at the moment and its pretty dead though Easter time has been less busy year on year for the past three years. Its most definately going to be a battle of the fitest. There are so many (too many) similar restaurants, the best ones will survive though I bet at least 25% will be gone from this area by Xmas. Joes was an exception, I doubt that would have survived on Piccadily circus!

I woud'nt be surprised to see the high end restaurants last it out here as there are a few exceptional ones and worth paying the extra for.

There are a few dinner deals, though not as many as you would expect and I mean specifically the restaurants catering for the QDL and VDL patron. Montys is one offering a good deal and although i'm not a big fan, the food is good and it does have a buzz.

Hi Corky,

I will try my best, but it's not my specialist age group! I'll see what my friends have to say, too.

Please could you be a little more specific as to your location? Quinta? Vale do Lobo? That might help me too. I'll get back to you soon.
