Trip to Egypt

We are planing to go to Egypt while we are in Ayia Napa. We are staying with Thomson and want to know if anyone knows how much they charge if we book it when we get there. If we book on-line it costs £259.50 each. Any advice would be of help.

Thomsons use Aeolos as their ground agent and to book all their tours. Their webiste doesn't list any prices unfortunately but if you go onto Thomson webiste itself sometimes they have a guide of what to do in each resort and a rough price

I did this trip to Egypt a few years ago, the biggest choice you have to make is whether to do it by air or cruise boat. We went by air the first time to save time which meant a trip back to Larnaca, but you can go from Paphos. We used a local travel agent to organise it and it all went very smoothly.

The second time we decided to cruise and picked the boat up in Limassol. It is for three days you spend two of them on the boat, which can be quite enjoyable, the outer decks are the best as you seem to have more room, the food on board is very good, and they treat you like royalty, but the expected tip is £10 per person, you need to bring Euros, and when you head to the pyrimads you stop off at a factory shop and can get some goodies, the trip after you get off the boat can be a bit alarming, as you see a lot of poverty. When you get off the boat you are given a packed lunch, please keep it for the little children that come around the bus when it stops, because they are genuinely poor..you will really enjoy the experience and the entertainment on board the boat is first class, and good duty free.

We used Sea Island Tours.

Hi, we also went on the 3 day cruise and thought it was brilliant, we booked it at a travel agent in Protarus, We also got a good deal on a 3 day car hire as well. We left Cyprus on a Thursday and arrived in Egypt Friday which is their Holy Day so the traffic on the roads wasn't too bad and we made good time to Cairo. we did buy a few trinkets at the Pyramids, but can't remember if we paid in pound coins. We didn't change any money. But if you have got any American dollars I'm sure you can use them. You do get hassled but there were police so there wasn't any bother. We even did a bit of bartering from the deck on the boat just before we set sail.Bought a little table, it folded down so we got it in the suitcase. The boat trip was good and the food was very nice and we met some nice people. It may be an expensive trip but I've always wanted to see the Pyramids so it was worth it. Enjoy.

Hi there, as CyprusSeaView says the local agent for Thomson is Aeolos Travel and their Cairo Flight goes out every Tuesday. This is a really popular trip so it can sell out, if you are arriving on the weekend and planning to go to Egypt on the Tuesday you might be safer booking in advance through the Thomson website to ensure availability. However you can also book through your Holiday Advisor in resort (you will get details of the welcome meeting/ visit times when you arrive), prices will be in Euros and will be pretty much equivalent as the online price although there are sometimes special offers in resort.

Whichever way you decide to book this is a fantastic trip that includes all the top sites (pyramids, Egypt museum, Nile cruise!) so definitely value for money

Thank you for your replies. We were hoping that someone who had been with Thomson this year might know how much the Reps are asking at the hotel. Whilst we don't mind them taking a bit we have noticed some big differences in the past. With the exchange rate as it is we have got to look at every cent. So if any one still has the info on thier return from Ayia Napa please let us know.

Don't know if this helps, we were in Ayia napa last year and it worked out through the hotel rep (Olympic) 300 euro each to fly, Mel says the 3 day cruise was 350 euroand the flight 330 euro when booked through agents in the town. Trip was Fantastic went to pyramids, sphinx, a papyrus factory, the Egyptian museum and a nile boat cruise, Oh! and a market! Picked up at hotel early hours in the morning though, but def well worth it! Booked for Sept this year and doing the 3 day cruise this time.

As I asked the question I thought it would help others as we have now been and returned. 1st of all if you book in the UK it will cost £258.50, if you book with the rep cost us 344euros, even allowing for a poor exchange rate you will pay about 40 euros more when away. Then to add more salt in the wound we could not pay by travelers cheque, only cash so we had to get the hotel to cash them @3% commision. Bottom line book it in the UK otherwise you will be giving the reps a bl**dy big tip for doing nowt.

As for the trip, it was fantastic. Watch out for the extras. 10 euros to go into the piramid (worth it), and 25 euros to go into the mummy room (we did not do it, many did and were not happy0 in the time they were in there we saw much more at no extra cost. Lastly be careful with the food, a number of us were ill and I think it was the food on the boat.
