Church of San Juan Bautista

The Church of San Juan Bautista is located at the Plaza Mayor, 2, and is a Romanesque church that was constructed in the second half of the 12th century. It is also called San Juan de Puerta Nueva. The church is dedicated to St. John the Baptist. The church was declared a Historic Monument in 1961. The tower fell in 1559 and has been restored several times. The tower had a large statue on top of a warrior with medieval armor that was used as a weather vane, and had the name of Peromato. A replica of this was put in place in 1987 and the origina is now in the Provincial Museum of Zamora. The main altarpiece was created by Juan de Montejo el Viejo in 1600. There is a statue of the Virgen de la Soledad that was sculpted by Ramon Alvarez in 1886. The church has many other works of art.
