Mastercard vs Cash

Hi All,

I use a credit card for abroad spending whenever we go on holidays - the conversion rate is amazing and no transaction fees.

We'll be going to Marrakech in Dececmber, so will we be able to use our credit card in restaurants, shopping, etc or will we always need to spend with cash?

If cash, then where is best to get the Dirhams from?

When we arrive in Marrakech, we'll need £30-40 worth of Dirhams? Are these easy to get from our local banks (in England) or Post Office?

Many thanks in advance!!

See this link for the multi-authored article on banks and money:

UK banks and the Post Office do not normally deal in Moroccan dirhams as the currency is closed on foreign exchanges.

Thanks for the replies.

Generally converting at the airport is very expensive. We could get just get £10-20 worth from the airport. Are there many places outside of the airport to get a better conversion rate on our pounds?

Hi,

Change a little at the airport as you say then there are many bureaux de change and banks in the city.

Is there an ATM at the Marrakech Airport? We usually just use our bank card to get local cash wherever we go. We'll also take some euros with us, but prefer to use local currency. Thanks.

Olives - the previous responses are referring to you obtaining dirhams from Marrakech airport not a UK airport.

Whilst it is likely to be expensive to obtain dirhams in the UK it is not in Marrakech airport.

In Marrakech airport there are 2 banks, 2 ATMs and numerous other exchange kiosks in the main airport hall (after baggage reclaim). It is easy to obtain dirhams.

In the city there are literally hundreds of banks, so it is easy to obtain dirhams during your stay.

It would be advisable to confirm with your own bank as to the daily withdrawal limit on your bank card. I could previously withdraw 4000 dirhams but this reduced to 2000 dirhams without notice.

Hi,

The article is not actually out of date at all. The amount you can withdraw depends on your bank and the limit they impose.

Thanks all - really useful information.

'Heresmyreply' - you are very true. When I think of converting currency at the airport, I immediately think of getting the most ridiculous rate ever!! This is the case in the UK and was also the case when we went to the States a few months ago.

I think that's great if the rates are good at the airport - makes everyone's lives a lot easier!! :)
