Surfing break

We have spent many xmas holidays at Palmas Del Mar and over the course of time have seen much of Puerto Rico. We have never been to the area between Ponce and Camuy Caves. Next xmas we will return to Puerto Rico ( may be one of our last times). We have 3 sons (21, 18, 17) and I was thinking a day or two learning to surf may be fun for them. How long would it take to drive to Rincon from Humacao and what is the general route? Can you get the hang of surfing in 1 or 2 days or is it frustrating( no surfing in the Toronto area!)? Is the water too rough at that time? Where do you suggest taking lessons and where do you suggest the 5 of us stay? I would rather not stay too many nights as our accomodations are already covered. Do you think it's worth it to go?

Thanks

Driving from Humacao to Rincón will take not less than 3 hours due to many cars on the road. I suggest staying in Rincón at least one or two nights while they are taking surfing lessons.

Before deciding which hotel you will be staying, please consider what are the interests of the others that are not going surfing. Some small guest houses, small hotels, and bed and breakfast are located in Rincón, but are not at the best locations for those without a car or non-surfers.

If your kids are beginers, you can also take lessons on the east side of the island. La Pared beach in Luquillo is a great spot for beginers as it is all sand bottom and only about chest deep so it is good for starters as there are no rocks or reefs to worry about. This will also be much closer to where you are staying in Palmas Del Mar. Call East ISland Surf Adventures and ask for Bob. He is very mellow, gives good theory, and has great patience with beginers of every age group-787-435-1760

Surfing Lessons by Luquillo is a nice option. Do you think it is better for beginners to learn in this area?

Is it worth going to the west area ( around Rincon) anyway as we never have been in this region- is it that different an experience from other parts of Puerto Rico? Is there whale watching end of Dec- beginning of January?

Is there any whale watching end of Dec. , beginning of January?

Regarding where to stay, we would have a car but wouldn't want to be too isolated or have to drive on windy roads at night to return to the hotel/b&b. We would want something moderately priced.

Javier makes a great point with regards to your choice for accomodations, choose where you would like to saty first, then think about surf lessons. We traveled the Island many times over before settling in RIncon, where we love it. Perhaps I am biased, but when considering all aspects, the beaches, dining, sunsets and views, water sports are the best here.Take a look at www.rinconpr.com, and www.rincon.org to get a feel for the area.

Christmas week is very busy, if you want a nice place to stay make your reservations NOW, most of the better places will be booked by March!

As for surf lessons when it come to beginners Rincon Surf & Board is great, expect to surf at least 5 days to get the hang of it. Jakes at paking lot's also offers good local lessons.
