Boat trips to Boccas from Panama City area?

We are flying in to Panama City but want to travel to Boccas and spend time in the islands, bus trip is too long, but return plane trip is expensive for 4of us, is there any boat trips/cruises we could get to or from the Boccas area back to Colon, or somewhere we can reach easily from Panama City?

Not that I have heard.

But anyway a boat trip would take longer than the bus.

Bocas del Toro? Oh heavens no, boat trip would be much more expensive than flying and take a lot longer than the bus--for one, they're on opposite coasts, so you'd need to do a Panama Canal transit, after taking a boat halfway down the country's coast.

we hoped we could get to Colon or Gatun area and then pick up a boat to Boccas,or nearby, we dont mind 12 hrs on a boat along the coast but being sat on a bus for 12 hours doesnt seem like fun

The only way you could do it is if you know someone or met someone with a boat who happened to be going that way at the same time that you want to go.

Have you thought about breaking up the bus trip and stopping off in Chitre or Las Tablas or Santa Fe or even Santiago for a day in each direction?

Yes, the bus trip is long, but much quicker than by boat. Ive sailed between Colon and Bocas a few times, the prevailing winds are light and the currents erratic (and often against you)...makes for a long slow slog. Its roughly 150 nautical miles. The most likely private vessels plying this route are sailboats, which will typically average about 6 knots...so that's about 25 hours underway...as opposed to about 11 by bus from PC to Bocas.

As suggested, consider breaking up the trip, there are plenty of interesting side trips on this route.
