Help with itinerary in August

Hi

This is our first time visiting Czech and need help with our itinerary. We love exploring around including taking walks in gardens and easy hikes. Any advise will be greatly appreciated.

Day 1:

Explore Prague city. Visit Prague castle, St Vitus Cathedral, church of Our Lady of Victory, Charles Bridge and Prague Astronomical Clock

Day 2 and 3 :

Drive to Cesky Krumlov and explore around.

Day 4:

Drive to Trebon and explore. Drive to Telc and explore

Day 5:

Drive to Palava. Explore Devicky Castle, lake and town

Day 6:

Drive to Pavlov. Visit Leidnice Castle and explore around.

Day 7:

Drive to Brno. Visit Cathedral of St Peter and St Paul, Moravian Musuem, Spillberk Castle.

Day 8:

Explore Pravcicka Brana.

Day 9:

Explore Pizen

Day 10:

Explore Karlstejn Castle, Terezin.

Also, is credit card widely accepted? Are there any traffic rules that we need to take note of?

Any suggestions are welcome too. Thanks!

First of all, I admire you for trying to see so much of the Czech Republic, including amazing things that most tourists never get to. But you are trying to see waaaaay too much in a short amount of time. You are trying to cover basically the entire country in only 10 days. There is no way that you can manage this. For example, you have yourselves going from Brno to Pravcicka brana on Day 8. That is 330 km that will take you around 4 hours with no traffic and no stops, but you will certainly hit traffic on the D1 highway, which is currently undergoing major reconstruction. Count on 6-7 hours for that trip.

Plus, you don't have enough time in Prague itself. You cannot see the whole city in one day. You need at least 2 but ideally 3. If you only have 10 days, then I would suggest 3 days in Prague, then making a road trip along this route: Prague - Cesky Krumlov - Trebon - Telc - Mikulov - Brno - back to Prague. Even that is really pushing it. If you are looking for some natural wonders (like Pravcicka brana), check out the Moravian Karst region north of Brno - it can be done in a day trip from Brno.

Credit cards are widely accepted - just make sure you know your PIN, as you will be asked for it. As for driving, make sure you have your lights on at all times and give way to trams when driving in cities. And make sure you have an International Driving Permit.

Knock off Plzen and Pravcicka from the itinerary....and don't bother with Devicky castle Mikulov, Valtice, Lednice , Pavlov..that's all you will have time for..just, barely..

Thank you JeffinPrague and Tilly41!

Yes, it sounds like too much to do in 10 days. Everything sounds nice when we read about it but we can't decide what to give up. It does seem far to travel.. Ok, will relook at the itinerary with my partner.

Thank you for the great advise!

Hi,

Is Olomouc worth a visit in mid to late August?

Olomouc has many beautiful churches, parks, botanical garden - it is a lovely town.

Another beautiful town is Trebic - have a look here for more inspiration:

Hi,

We will also be traveling to Prague in August and hoping for some advice on how to spend our free time so we can see as much as we can.

We will be arriving on 8/20/2014 and departing on 8/23/2014. We expect to arrive at Andel’s & Suite Prague on the early afternoon on 8/20/2014 and wish to start seeing the sights that afternoon. On 8/21/2014, we will enjoy a guided tour of the Hradcany Castle, a walk in the Castle Courtyards, see the Staromestske Square, beautiful churches, and the Astronomical Clock on the Old Town Hall Tower. We will have free time the afternoon of the 8/22/2014 and the full day on 8/23/2014 to enjoy the sights and flavor of Prague.

We understand that we will not be able to see everything in the limited time and have picked the following places as sites that we would most like to see:

• Petrin Observation Tower

• Old Jewish Quarter

• Prague Castle (Prazeskhrad)

• Charles Bridge

• Old Town Square

• Lesser Quarter

• Wenceslas Square

Unfortunately, we do not know enough about the city to determine the best way to see the above sites and hoped you could provide us with an order that we should travel to be able to see as much as we can. We will be departing the morning of the 8/23/2014 for the USA.

We appreciate any comments.

Let me start with this: Hradcany castle is Prague castle and you will probably walk from the castle through the Lesser Quarter over the Charles bridge to the Old Town (Old Town square is Staromestske square ) The Jewish quarter is a part of the Old Town - so you can continue from the Old town square to go there.

@ clownlady

best tip....find Tram #22 to get up the hill and behind Prague castle...everything is downhill from there and you can cover a full swath that will include almost everything on your list.
