Simple, solid restaurants

Hi, will be doing some time in Prague from next week. Have an apartment by the National Theatre - and although I am aware that's in the tourist zone, I am hoping to find some simple, local places to eat. I'll be happy to walk to get to them.

So anything interesting within a 20 minute walk from the theatre, where one can escape the other tourists and sit down for a simple, solid, inexpensive meal, I would really appreciate the info.

Thanks.

I'm sure there are so many choices in the area but I have been a few times to :

Olympia (of Kolkovna group). Just across the bridge from National Theater side. 3 minutes walk. Simple Czech and some international food (Italian, etc). Inexpensive and 300cc beer was about 25 krona so that's pretty cheap.

There is Café Savoy even closer to the bridge, more elaborated and accordingly expensive.

Cafe Slavia across the road from National Theatre - the main meal would be less than 10 euros. Good for people watching.

Well, I just read a review on above expat site I posted. The poster does not say about the food but wonders about a possible racism (malaysian ...). FYI, I'm of Asian origine myself and had no problem whatsoever when went there alone or with a friend. Think the poster was just unlucky, I don't know. I have eaten sitting at a table or when full, at the bar area at a high table/stool, with some locals drinking beer, had encountered no problem.

The review on the Expats forum was written in 2007 and the OP said he had been there the year before when this happened which makes it 2006 ,so hopefully things have changed since then .. there are mixed reviews on here

I don't know what the proplem is. As far as I'm concerned, there has not been one. The first time I was there was like 2005 (after recommendation by peb7 where I was staying nearby). Ok, any place can have off days/moments.

As to the reviews on the URL you provided Torii, the poster from Muinich says he was shocked of the amount of the bill that he received. BUT that's strange. Bills you receive there are printed and itimized so he should be able to tell the details of the cost but he doesn't say that. He aslo wrote :

"wild boar with dumplings and cabbage for CZK 135 which was an almost too high price considering the quality. " And I think CZK135 (about €6.-) is quite inexpensive for a main dish. I really canot tell about their boar dish though because I have never had it. Maybe, just maybe he doens't know the correct value of CZK135.

It was probably just a lousy service, but a long time ago, hopefully things have improved.

I've eaten at U Benedikta for about 30 years. It survived socialism and is thriving under capitalism. I met some Russian friends in Prague a couple weeks ago and took them there. They loved it and even went back for a repeat visit.
