Garnet

We will be coming to Prague shortly and we are interested in buying garnet jewelry, does anyone have any suggestions on where to buy it at a reasonable price please?

Good question

Strangely it might be cheaper to buy them outside a country that specializes it

Dominican Republic for example is very expensive for amber or it was where I looked and I could buy the same stones cheaper when I got home

Unless you want a KG that is

I know nothing about the prices, but I've heard about many counterfeits in the unauthorised shops - news from august 2010 in Czech ct24.cz/domaci/… (13 of 15 inspected shops offered counterfeits). Article "How to buy Czech garnet" from May 2010 in Czech financninoviny.cz/zajimavosti/…472141 (almadin is often sold instead of garnets). Use a web translator to get an idea, don't be scared by the result - granát means garnet and also grenade.

The only producer (mentioned in the articles) of the original Czech garnet (Český granát) is company Granát Turnov http://www.granat.eu/en/ . I would buy it directly from their shop http://www.granat.eu/en/index.php?p=42 . Other offers could be cheaper but the garnet will probably be counterfeit.

I agree you can confidently buy garnets at "Granat Turnov" on Dlouha Street. (they have since opened another location)

Granat Turnov is actually a cooperative of garnet producers and goldsmiths. Their prices are fair, and the quality is 100% pure and guaranteed.

Thank you very much for the info, this site is very helpful. We are very excited about our trip and can not wait till Thursday! From what I have read it must be close to the Beer Museum so we can stop in there on the way - chances are my husband would rather stay in there and let me go shopping by myself!

Cant say the designs are appealing mind

Hello,

Could you please advise me on amber as well? Is the percent of fake amber sold in the shops the same as for garnet? I have seen thousands of pieces of amber jewelry, I also bought one ring to have as memory and I now am very curious (and doubtful :) ) of its authenticity.

Thank you

Most Amber sold in Prague does not come from the Czech Republic but from Poland and the Baltic Regions. Unfortunately there are some shops in Prague that sell fake amber, best to buy in larger well known stores .
