Where to stay - to get the local atmosphere

Going to Prague for 3 days in September. Want to see the tourist sites but also experience the true life of the locals.. not just touristy restaurants, clubs etc. Have a car. Any ideas would be appreciated.

Thankyou

A car in Prague is not very useful. Public transport is great and traffic can be a headache like in most cities.

The true life of the locals has many different faces. The locals live in many different ways. What concretely are you interested in? Shopping at a farmer's market? Going to a local pub?

Some locals live in the very center -- which might be a great place to stay for a short visit. Some live in the communist area apartment buildings -- it would not be much fun to stay there while on vacation.

Yes, bear in mind that 95% of people don't live in the centre, or even go into the centre, so best to stay somewhere in the suburbs in order to get some local flavour - but each area has its own flavour ... As mentioned above a car is useless in the centre and would be an expensive millstone around your neck. I suggest maybe Dejvice - Hanspaulka which is a pleasant upmarket district and you can safely park your car for free on the road.

Yes, as above. Zizkov. It's local, but the buildings are interesting older ones, not block upon block of monotonous, concrete, communist panel flats.

It's not too far out of town, and on one side is a metro station (Jiriho Z Podebrad), or on the other tram 9 can get you to Wenceslas Square in a few minutes. Other local areas further out of town, could mean you spending lots of time commuting. Park the car and leave it. Public transport and Shank's pony are all you need in Prague.

Lots of great bars in Zizkov, eg. U sadu (the orchard), in Skropovo Namesti. A lively bar, with good food, and some excellent microbrew beers. Dozens more good pubs in Zizkov.
