From Dresden to Prague by train/bus at night?

Hi,

We really need your help.

On October 8, we plan to arrive to Prague from Dresden by bus or train after 7PM. We are staying at Corinthia Hotel. I have a few questions:

1. Are there any ATMs near the bus or train station that we can use to get cash?

2. We are planning to take the metro to the hotel but in order to do this we need to buy the tickets, however, we will not have any coins. What options do we have in order to buy metro tickets after 7PM without having coins? Is there a place where we can get coins? We would like to take a taxi but we understand that it is not a very good idea.

3. What station is easier/better (bus or train) in order to get to our hotel and to find an ATM at night?

4. We will have a phone with a German SIM card. Will it work in Prague? Is it better to buy a SIM card in Prague. If yes, can we buy it after 7PM and where? Also, what is the best SIM card in order to call to US and probably making a couple local calls?

Thank you very much for your help.

Which Corinthia hotel? There is one across from the congress center (Towers - metro Vysehrad) and another called Panorama (metro Pankrac). Either way, they are both on the red C line, which goes from the Florenc bus station and the main train station (one stop apart). Access to the metro is slightly better from the train station. You can buy tickets in any kiosk or newsstand (like Relay) using banknotes. Just ask for a ticket for 24 crowns. That is for 30 mintues, which is more than enough time to get yourselves to Vysehrad or Pankrac. You can probably buy your tickets at newstands using euros as well.

There are plenty of ATMs everywhere. Again, I think they will be easier and more obvious at the train station. I wouldn't recommend changing money at the train station.

You can use your German SIM card here, but it will be more expensive because of roaming charges. You can buy Czech prepaid SIM cards at any kiosk. There are 6 Relay kiosks at the main train station alone, so no problem finding one. The prepaid rates to the US won't be very good and you'll probably burn your credit very quickly. There are three companies: O2, T-Mobile and Vodafone. You can check their Czech websites for the rates to decide which to buy. All should be available at the kiosks.

Buy your train ticket from www.bahn.com or www.cd.cz/eshop Cost from €19

There is a train at 1708, arriving at 1926, then at 1908, arriving at 2126, also a couple of quicker buses, I think www.studentagency.eu does that route. See www.idos.cz for times.

A great hotel with an excellent view. You should be able to find everything without a problem. ATM, kiosk, metro, hotel. Enjoy your trip!

Oh, make sure to sit on the left side of the train. The view over the Elbe is amazing. There is a castle called Strekov perched over the river in the city of Usti nad Labem that is very impressive.

Left side facing travel, that is ...

Intervals between metros will be the same whichever train you get, but of course you won't see much of the views if you get the later train.

Thank you very much!

We just bought the tickets arriving Prague at 19:26. We are leaving Berlin on October 7 with a stop in Dresden and arriving Prague on October 8. The ticket price is 39 euro per ticket.

Thank you again for all your help.
