Trips from Prague

3 of us will be flying into Prague in early June 2014 and intended to travel around the region for about 12 days before coming back to Prague to explore Prague itself.

Please advise if the following itinerary doable:

Prague to Vienna - 2 nights in Vienna

Vienna to Bratislava - 3 nights in Bratislava

Bratislava to Budapest - 3 nights in Budapest

Budapest to Krakow - 3 nights in Krakow

Krakow to Prague

Should we skip one city to spend more time in others?

Should we take trains for this trip? Is hiring a car cheaper?

Thank you.

1. Re: Trips from Prague

some general tidbits

not really enough to see/do in Bratislava..you can really skip it or visit just for a day/afternoon

the usual trio is Prague,Budapest, Vienna

I believe Krakow will take the most effort to reach. about 8 hours to get back to Prague

do not buy any type of EuroRail pass, book via the respective rail line websites

Car is not advisable..1/ parking in center is difficult 2/ you have to have highway stickers for each country 3/other means of transportation are affordable and most often reliable

Bus travel depends on how long you are able to endure sitting in a smaller space...train always offers more room to move about. No need for reservations or first class on the train.

others can help with more of the specifics

you can also use the search box above...type in key words, such as 'Budapest' ,'"Krakow' etc. you will find previous posts

agree you can either stop of in bratislava on the way to budapest or skip.

How you use the extra time form Bratislava depends on your preferences and budget, Vienna is quite expensive, more "posh", grandiose, the other places are more cosy.

I really like Krakov, try to keep it in the agenda I think it is wort it.

As long as you are visiting the main cities then trains / buses are fine. Car give you added flexibility to see places off the beaten track which are not easily reached by public transport.

Thank you both for your advices. We will take trains to the cities, and will just cover Budapest and Krakow in the 12 days.

FYI, for Budapest..if you want to tour Parliament building you can reserve/book tour on line.

I enjoy the thermal spas...go late afternoon and stay until after dark. http://www.szechenyibath.hu/

I've used Maverick Hostel twice if you are looking for something nice and reasonable price. mavericklodges.com/eng/maverick_hostel_ensui…

there are two parts of the city Buda and Pest..on each side of the river

lots of paprika products, original home of goulash, fish soup

for ex. train from Prag to Budapest can be as low as $25 USD one way pp..book/buy on line in advance. You select a specific time for the train. This a good price but it is non-refundable ticket in the event you miss the train.

enjoy your visit
