St. Mikulas Eve

Planning an early December trip. We fly into Budapest Nov. 29 and out of Prague Dec. 9. We stumbled on some information about St. Mikulas Eve in Prague's Old Town Square. It sounds like something that might be a shame to miss. Is it still a big event? What time do the festivities start?

We had originally planned to arrive in Prague on the 5th (after 4 nights in Budapest and 2 in Vienna), but we're thinking of adding a night in Bratislava, which might change our itinerary - unless St. Mikulas is a don't miss event. Thanks!

Regardless of the Mikulas celebrations, I wouldn't add a night in Bratislava at the expense of Prague. It is enough to stop for 3-4 hours on the way from Budapest to Prague (all of the trains stop there, so easy to hop on and hop off). Or fine for a day trip from Vienna.

Mikulas is fun, but it is mainly for kids. And it provides another excuse for Czechs to drink. I've never been to the event on Old Town Square, but I've seen pictures - lots of people dressing up like angels and devils, getting drunk and having a good time.

Thanks! That is also helpful in our hotel decision. We were looking at U Prince on Old Town Square - maybe not if we want to sleep Monday night.

If we added time in Bratislava, we would probably shave off the Budapest side of things. We may simply play that by ear.

A few years ago we left Prague on the 5th December and from our hotel on Haštalská it took us nearly an hour to get out of the city because of the traffic that was coming in ....luckily our driver (thanks Pivo) had the sense to come and pick us up early ..just in case !
