There is no real district as such, but everywhere is easily reached on foot or a short tram ride. What sort of nightlife were you after, and what is your budget? There are loads of pubs and clubs all over the city to cater for all tastes.

During the week and even at the weekend it can seem quiet, especially in the centre - the reason for this is that it is all under the ground.

Saying that, though, there is plenty to keep you busy:

Charlies Hat on Kobližná is always a good bet but you have got to go late - it doesn't start getting lively until past midnight, and beware - it can be extremely smoky.

Livingstones on Dominikánské náměstí - typical student disco-type place, little bit old-fashioned, but fun

Vyhlidka - a cool rooftop bar on náměstí Svobody in the city centre - full of the 'beautiful people' http://www.vyhlidka-cafe.cz/

Tabarin - sleazy flea-pit pick-up joint and is always full until the early hours

Remix - I haven't been for years but used to be good http://remixclub.allsite.cz/onas.html

Caribic - caribic.cz/music-club-brno/…white-party salsa club

Fléda http://fleda.cz/ - one of the most popular places, a short tram ride from the centre

Daguerre http://www.daguerre.cz/ - if you can find it, it is a non-descript door on Slovákova and is an arty student type place and can be heaving

Two Faces http://www.twofaces.cz/ - typical disco

and there is lots more, you just have to look. Some more ideas in here guardian.co.uk/travel/… everywhere stays open until the last person has gone.

A good time to go is end of May/beginning of June when there is the fireworks festival http://www.ignisbrunensis.cz/?setLanguage=eng and the city is buzzing.

If you want somewhere that is more 'in your face' and has a defined district, then Ostrava is the place - it is the party capital of the Czech Republic, despite the air quality. There is a district called 'Stodolní' where there are 150 pubs and clubs all in close proximity to one another tripadvisor.co.uk/Attraction_Review-g274719-…

I agree, no specific area, though several inexpensive ones are close to Masaryk's university.

Here is a list:

If you like jazz/blues:

Alterna: http://www.alterna.cz/text/kontakty/45

Desert: not always jazz, check the program closer to your dates: http://www.dodesertu.com/index.php/program

Mostly RnB: but check: http://www.caribic.cz/ GCEK mentions it too...

Freeland - more pub/restaurant, sometime live music: (inexpensive daily menu)

Z Nebe: http://www.freelandclub.cz/tydenni-menu/

Pubs: http://www.thepub.cz/brno/program/ (not my choice, but my grown up kids loved it-( sometime live music)

http://livingstoneclub.cz/ - see GCEK's comment

There are several clubs in Brno-Veveří, but you probably want to stay in the centre (Immigrant, Melodka)

Really inexpensive pub/restaurant, especially Midday Specials: U Putny

http://www.uputny.cz/denni-menu.php (Closed Sundays) Great Cerna Hora Beer. BTW the Motto: Kde se pivo pije, tam se dobre zije = You live well in place where you can drink beer...so similar translation...

Hotel Omega -reasonable rates - not far... (booking.com & others...)

Also Penzion Na Starem Brne: tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Review-g274714-d573952…

Brno-Kralovo Pole - great pub/restaurant: http://www.u3opic.cz/napojovylistek.php

What is your budget?
