Driving in Poland

You remember the general rules? Dipped headlights (not sidelights or running lights) on at all times (save for when you put them on main beam) and keep to the speed limits especially in towns and village between the skyline signs. Watch out for speed limit reductions for crossings, junctions, schools, watch out for fast (left) lanes becoming left turn lanes and slowing down unexpectedly on main highways (but not otorways, thank goodness!).

Now we're heading into winter, for everyone's sake, put on your winter tyres. The difference in grip will convince anyone they're worth the cost, whether you're driving rwd, fwd or 4wd. Don't forget, though, that winter tyres do NOT make you a driving god ... and that the car in front or coming the other way may not have them fitted.

And once we get into the icy snowness - carry chains. The police will stop youi if you drive on chains when it's not necessary, but they'll also stop you and tell you to put then on when conditions demand them.

Feel free to add Polish winter driving tips

Oh, I just remembered - park your wipers OFF the screen - either slip some paper or somethig under the blade or flip your wipers forward to stop them freezing to the glass.

And carry de-icer and add anti-freezer to your washer bottle(s)

And carry torch, blankets, biscuits and water if you are worried about getting stuck for any length of time. Winter can cause accidents, but snow can also block roads and I've been glad I took a few of these items along on journeys when the traffic stopped for several hours crossing Germany and Poland.
