Weather in January and March

Considering going to Gdansk for 3 days in either January or march '09... For any locals: How cold could it possible be - Whats the likehood of snow in either months.... Are either of these months known to be "rainy"

Any thoughts of what are "must"see... have visited Warsaw and Krackow

Also appreciate if anyone has suggestions for where to stay - close to the centre of things -near or in the old town.. looking for reasonable priced but a hotel/guesthouse with character please..

Any thoughts on the Gothik Guesthouse in the old town?

Many thanks for your help...

Can't tell you about Jan or March but went to Gdansk this time last year, was cold but no worse than here, dry with no snow. However went to Gdynia for half a day - felt like the coldest place on earth due to incredibly bitter wind! Had to wrap up in hats + gloves. Didn't get outside the TriCity area, the centre of Gdansk is beautiful especially the main square (though no match for Krakow), a marvel considering it was all rebuilt after WW2. Not much going on in the winter though and was difficult to find restaurants and bars open - everywhere seemed closed. Sopot is nice enough for a half-day trip but give Gdynia a miss - it's a hellhole. Stayed in a pleasant hotel in Oliwa which is a nice quiet leafy suburb well connected by the TriCity train.

there's a polish saying:

in march like in pot

which literally means that the weather is unpredictable

you can expect rain, can be 20 degrees, can be snow, can be anything ;-)

i wouldn't miss out on gdynia

yes,it is a windy place (well, it's near the bay so what do you expect?) but it has beautiful modernist architecture and lot of pleasent places for a walk and having coffee

have a nice stay! :]
