I am biased - but my experience was wonderful, its a easy town to explore. I stayed at Hotel Jan, clean, very central and staff very helpful in giving advise and arranging things.

Have a look at Krakow tours for trip to Auschwitz and possibly transfers.

Go to Ghetto Square, Schindler's Factory, consider Gestapo Museum.

Loads od excellent cafes, bars, restaurants depending on your likes 🙂

Ask more questions for your needs, I and others will give you lots of recommendations

My advice chaffy is not to go, unless you are prepared to fall in love with a lovely city and prepared to return again and again.

I lasted just 6 weeks between my first trip (with 2 friends) and second trip (solo traveller). That was 13 years ago and I have returned many, many times since and will be back next week.

Apartments are very affordable to rent with many in the old town and kazimierz (the former Jewish quarter)

My advice is not to think about it, just book it.

This short video sums up mine and many other tourist’s feelings about Krakow

Hotel Rezydent and Hotel Jan (as mentioned by OP) are very central just metres from the square. However there are many fantastic Airbnb apartments throughout, most within a 10/15 min walk from the square. Kazimierz (Jewish quarter) is a twenty minute walk away and has become a very hip area and you are guaranteed many authentic bars and restaurants. Krakow centre is pretty small by most European city standards so you will be able to walk throughout. Whether you stay around the main square(Rynek) or Kazimierz you will most likely cross to the other side of town anyhow, so best to pick your choice of accommodation as opposed to location. The best bars and restaurants are too numerous to name but we love Piano Rouge, Harris Jazz bar (both on the square) and Alchemia in Kazimierz. But don't tie yourself to one bar and restaurant, there are so many hidden gems up alleyways and in cellars, part of the fun is to go looking for them :)

Our first time in Krakow was four years ago in May. I recall feeling like all the people in the lovely town square were like distant family members (only the nice ones). Families, young couples, and retired folks all walking around on a sunny Sunday. I was impressed with Krakow on so many levels.

I can relate to that Donna.

When our plane took off after my first visit to Krakow I looked down on the snow covered landscape and I was so upset to be leaving. It felt like I was leaving a loved one behind.

Everyday for the next 2 weeks I felt down and then decided “I’m going back”. At the time there weren’t any budget flights to Poland from the UK and I flew there 6 weeks later via Prague That was the start of my love affair with Krakow.

About a year ago, I was a first-timer in Krakow and Poland. I had what I would call a "mix experience", I loved some parts, others not so much. Take a look at my trip report, it can tell you what was what. Hopefully it will give you some useful hints.
