Day trips from Warsaw including Kampinos National Park

We will be arriving in Warsaw in early August for a 6 day stay with a friend before going to Krakow for a few days and the Tatras for a week.

Our friend will be busy with work and am wondering about possible day trips once we have seen the sites in Central Warsaw. Don't want to go anywhere that involves travelling for more than an hour and a half each way and would be using public transport unless there are any reasonable organised tours.

Our interests are nature/hiking and social history. Lonely Planet mentions Kampinos National Park- not sure if we could visit in a day or should overnight?

The fact that you don't want to travel more than 1.5 hours makes things more complicated. Otherwise I would be able to recommend several interesting destinantions which can be visisted as a day trip from Warsaw (e.g. Lublin, Torun, Poznan, Lodz etc). Unlike Krakow or Gdansk, the surroundings of Warsaw are not particularly beautiful: the landscape is flat, most areas are either industrial or agricultural and the towns around Warsaw do not offer anything special. Lodz is th only city located not too far from Warsaw (a little more than 1.5 hours from Warsaw by train) however Lodz is not a picturesque place: there is quite a nice main street wih beautiful architecture and lots of restaurants, cafes and shops (ul. Piotrkowska) and a former industrial complex which was turned into a modern shopping and cultural mall (Manufaktura). Otherwise Lodz is rather grey and depressing. Also Plock might be worth considering but there is little more to see than a church on a rock.

Kampinoski national park is not far from Warsaw and I assume it can easily be reached by public transport (several 7XX bus lines from Warsaw to nearby Izabelin). Don't expect too much from it, it's mainly about animal watching, the landscape is not that picturesque. There is quite a good map on Polish Wikipedia which shows all the walking paths in the park:http://pl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Plik:Kampinoski_Park_Narodowy-mapa_szlak%C3%B3w.png

Thanks for this helpful response. We have decided to spend a couple more days in Krakow and shorten our time in Warsaw.
