First buy a vignette for Slovenian highways

dars.si/Dokumenti/…Vignette_308.aspx

dars.si/Dokumenti/…20PM_ITALIJA2.doc

Maybe this will help you: cntraveler.com/features/…

Ljubljana 2 nights, Bled and Bohinj I will also recommend 2 nights. If you like the nature maybe even more because there is the place for you.

Also very nice place is Logar Valley www.logarska-dolina.si/index.php?jez=EN

or Soča Valley http://www.dolina-soce.si/eng/

or maybe also Bela Krajina http://www.belakrajina.si/en

or Prekmurje http://www.park-goricko.org/en/prvastran.asp

Ljubljana is actually a very good base because is in the centre of the country

Ljubljana - Piran are 120kms

Ljubljana - Maribor 130kms

Ljubljana - Bled 45 minutes driving

Your plans should depend on the weather forecast. You should definitely visit the NW part of Slovenia (Bled, Bohinj, Kranjska gora, Kobarid, Bovec, ...), however, these places are well known for the worst weather in Slovenia.

You can drive via Trieste and stop for a day or two at the coast (Piran, Portoroz Secovlje). Then, you can visit the caves on the way to Ljubljana. Ljubljana is a good base for visiting the nearby towns (Skofja Loka, Kamnik, even Bled). Afterwards you can spend a few days at Bled/Bohinj or at Kobarid/Bovec.

You should not miss the eastern part of Slovenia. There are some very impressive wine roads, old towns and spas in the area. You can spend a few days at one of the spas (Sotelia-Orhidelia at Olimje is probably the best choice) and use it as a base. Another good decision is Ptuj.

5. Re: Slovenia for 2 weeks, where to go?

I think is a good idea

or think about for example have one base in Ljubljana and visit the coast, Bled, Bohinj, Postojna Cave and other base in Maribor and visit Prekmurje, the city of Maribor, Ptuj and so on.

Because the distance between Bled and Ljubljana is 45 minutes driving.

If you like the outdoors and walking, you will love Slovenia. Bled is pretty, also a good idea as a 'base', particularly for lake bohinj, caves etc. I would definitely advise you to get around the area surrounding bled. The Julian alps are also breathtaking (Kranjska Gora is a great doorway to the Julian alps). Mind you as Sonny also advises Ljubljana is an excellent, larger base for exploring Slovenia. A beautiful city with a great vibe, but not excessively crowded like UK cities and also handy for getting to key places to visit. The size of Slovenia means you can get around it with ease. We have now visited Slovenia twice and can't wait to return.
