Feedback on 2 weeks itinary in October

Hi,

Planning a 2 week trip for the last 2 weeks of October for my husband and I. The plan is to fly in Ljubljana, make our way around by public transport and hire car for day tripping, and flying out of Sarajevo. Wanted to get some feedback before making reservations. Any feedback is much appreciated. Thank you.

My questions:

- Does the following itinerary make sense? I am more interested in the history, scenery, architecture than the beach or night life.

- Want to put in 1 island if possible, but this late in the year, is it worth it? Is Kvar a good choice in terms of things being open, ferry availability, etc,.. Picked that one because it seems an easy and close access.

- I really want to work in Sarajevo rather than do too many islands, as I’ll probably never go back there again, so willing to skip Mostar if need be.

- Don’t mind the driving; I’m used to long commute.

- Any feedback on the north to south vs a south to north sequence?

1-4 Fly in Ljubljana, sleep 4 nights.

Rent car for side trips to a) Bled, b) Julian Alp loop with stop at Kobarid Museum and c) Skocjan Caves in morning, lunch in Piran, afternoon to Rovinik.

Can Bled and Julian loop be combined in a day? Or perhaps sleep en route somewhere? Once you see the Lake Bled and the town, not sure I want to just hang out there that’s why I thought it could be done in the day loop but everyone seems to say it’s worth going for a day just to the Lake. At this time of the year, not sure.

5- Train to Zagreb. Sleep in Zagreb.

6- Explore more Zagreb in morning. Bus to Plitvice at the end the day. Sleep near Park.

7 - Explore Plitvice Park in the morning. Catch bus later in the afternoon to Split. Sleep in Split.

8 - Explore Split. Sleep in Split.

9 - Catch ferry to Kvar. Sleep in Kvar.

10 - Return ferry to Split. Catch bus to Dubrovnik. Sleep in Dubrovnik.

11-12 Explore Dubrovnik. Hire Car for side trip to Bay of Kotor. Sleep in Dubrovnik.

13-14 To Sarajevo. Sleep in Sarajevo 2 nights.

What’s best? By bus? Flight? I read there is a train from Mostar? Should I take the bus from Dubrovnik to Mostar, spend a few hours in Mostar then catch train to Sarajevo? Or fly?

15 - Fly out.

The weather in late October wil be cooler and more unstable, but it's the perfect time to catch the fall foliage. I recommend going north to south as the closer you get to November, the higher the chance of rain and the temperatures are lower. Obviously that happens later the more south you go.

Cannot comment on the Croatian and Bosnian sections of the trip, but your Slovenian itinerary sounds good. To answer your question regarding Bled, no, you won't be able to do it in a day. It would be a better idea to combine Bled with nearby Bohinj on one day and do the loop on a separate day. You could spend a night in Bled or Kranjska Gora, so you're closer to Vrsic the next day, however you won't save more than an hour or so on your loop driving time compared to spending the night in Ljubljana.

Like said before it is better to combine Bled and Bohinj together, maybe some light hike on Pokljuka plateau. You can even visit Bled for one day (Bled castle, island, Vintgar gorge, walk around the lake and taste bled cream cake) sleep there and next day to Bohinj lake, waterfall Savica and with train (auto train) to Most na Soči and Kobarid. Having just returned from Bled and Ljubljana I would NOT stay in Lj for 4 days--much better to spend a couple of nights in Bled and a couple in Lj. Bled itself is small, but oh so relaxing. The nearby Vintgar gorge is stunning although if you are going to Plitvich it won't compare. On our first trip to Bled we took a tour over the Julian Alps. It was a lot of driving, but this area is full of World War 1 history and very fascinating. We canoed down the Soca and hiked to waterfalls. It was great fun, but we could easily have done it on our own--Rick Steves Guide book on Slovenia has a driving tour you could follow.

As luck would have it I've been blogging about our trip to Slovenia, feel free to check it out for tips, hotel picks and pictures. Good Luck and have a great time!

Thank you for your feedback ApartmentValent. Everything seem so nice in that area!

If I leave Lake Bled in the mid-morning to do the loop (Vrsic Pass, Bovec, Kobarid) and next

morning we want to drive to Skocjan Caves. Google Map says it's one hour and half via H4/103 from Kobarid to Caves.

Is it better to sleep a) in /around Kobarid or somewhere after Kobarid, b) along the way in Soca Valley, Tolmin, Nova Gorica, or c) even closer to the caves? Is there a /town/area to sleep in that leg you would recommend? Everything seems so nice, it's hard to make selections! Thanks

My personal favourites to spend the night would be Bovec or Kobarid. Bovec is more lively, but both are equaly lovely.

If you want to stay at river Soča is the best option Bovec or Kobarid (from Bovec to Kobarid is just 20 min driving). Bovec is more active, everything there is conect with nature (hiking, rafting, canyoning, biking,....). In Kobarid is also museum of 1.WW. Options is also to stay for a night in Goriška Brda (nice wines, prosciutto, good cuisine).

I agree with the others, spend the night either in Bovec/Kobarid or in the Goriška Brda region. There are plenty of accommodation options in Nova Gorica, but I would advise against staying there, its not a very nice town especially compared to places like the Vipava Valley or Goriška Brda nearby.
