price of vignettes in Europe and where to purchase

Help! We're going to Europe next year and will be hiring a car and have been advised the best way to travel is on the highways and to purchase vignettes from each country we're travelling through.

Can someone please advise where we have to purchase them and what countries don't use them.

I believe a fine of up to 400euros can be incurred if we don't use them.

We'll be travelling through Germany, Slovakia, Slovenia, Czech Republic, Italy and France.

Many thanks,

Hardy Newcastle.

You can buy the motorway vignettes at gas stations.

If you rent the car, make sure you are allowed to take it out of the given country!

Thank you for the prompt reply.

Puts our mind at ease now we know how to go about purchasing the vignettes. That's one problem solved.

In Germany, most of the autobahns are free.

In Italy and France, they still have toll gates where you collect your ticket upon entry and pay upon exit.

For other countries that use a vignette, it is important to purchase them at the first available opportunity. You will have to check each country for their various requirements, cost and duration of the vignette.

But, the advice you have received about only using highways is not necessarily the best advice. YES, if you want to get from point A to point B, they are the quickest and most efficient roads - but not necessarily the most scenic. The more relaxed national roads (usually single carriagewy in both directions with no tolls) lead you into more scenic ways and towns - but are much much slower in driving time. So it all depends on what you are planning to do.

Thank you for the information. We were getting ourselves into a state about the high fines and am most grateful to everyone who has helped us out as our travel agent didn't know anything about the tolls, vignettes etc.

A travel agent like that is worth every penny.

Also read the instructions carefully on the back of the vignettes - the Austrian, Slovak and Czech versions have instructions in English - probably the Hungarian ones do as well - you will have to write the vehicle registration number on them somewhere, and also retain the tear-off portion, otherwise they will be invalid. And watch where you position them on the window - there will be an indication as to where.

There is quite a lot of information here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vignette_(road_tax)

NB buy them BEFORE you enter the country or start driving on a motorway - if you have foreign plates, particularly in Austria, the police will be extra vigilant. There is also a 'pecking order' in Austria of nationality of cars - Hungarian and Slovak come pretty low down and are considered fair game, not only by the police. Some countries have slightly unexpected bylaws - in the Czech Republic and Slovakia, for example, you must have dipped headlights on at all times.

And as per Rawlee - make sure the rental company will allow you to take the car to the 'wild East' :)

there is a wealth of information in here as well fco.gov.uk/en/…

I wonder sometimes about these 'travel agents' ... :)

It wold be very hard to read anything on ours, or write on it, as its electronic, you only get the receipt of the purchase.

I have never had personal experience with a Hungarian one, but they all have their own little quirks!
