Is Budapest really interesting?

Hello,

I'm thinking of a place to go on holidays and I came on an idea to go to Budapest. However, I'd like to ask you for one thing: is there anything interesting there? You know: I'd like to go to a big city with both monuments and worth-visiting shops. I don't know why, but Budapest seems to have nothing interesting for me. Yeah, there is a castle and.. Erm.. Oh, a castle! ;) I don't even know any famous shopping street in Budapest - is there any? You know: when I think about London, I say "Yeah. Harrods, Buckingham, Trafalgar, Hyde Park, other things, many millions of people.. Yeah, it's worth seeing.". When I think about Paris, I say: "Moulin Rouge, Eiffel Tower, Louvre, shopping streets.. It's worth seeing.". But when I think about Budapest: I don't know if it's not a problem to talk in English there, it seems small and not entertaining to me. Am I wrong? I hope I am. Please let me know if and how I am wrong.

Best regards,

Tigro

Hi,

first of all is not a problem to find people speaking english or others languages. This is the last problem.

Budapest is a beautiful town, with a rich history and so many places to visit ....

Castle quarter and castle hill, Royal Palace, Fischermen's Bastion, Parliament, Heroes' Square, Liberty Statue, the bridges, Andrassy ut, State Opera House, St. Stephens Balisica, Memento Park, Museums, Art galleries, baths (as Szechenyi and Gellert, Music, theatres and events. Shopping streets and big commercial centre. I thing you are wrong!!!

Enjoy beautiful Budapest !!

Could you please write here what are the names of those shopping streets? I'd like to check them out myself on the Internet :)

I suggest you might like to get hold of a book called 'Only in Budapest' which lists 84 different places of interest in the city, along with some of their history and how to get there.

As for shopping, why not do that at home ?

How about these stereotypes:

Budapest: thermal baths, wine, architecture, Danube and bridges, peculiar language, goulash, socialist past.

Re shopping, it's a wrong city if you are looking for famous designer clothing and stuff from new collections. Of course, there is Fashion Street and stores of all major brands, and many shopping malls, but it is very Hungarian-market oriented, which is not to everyone's liking. But major advantage - it's cheap comparing to W. Europe.

However, if you are interested in local designers, you may find many interesting things here.

Shopping abroad has some kind of magic in itself ;)

Hmm.. I'm reading about Budapest and it seems quite similar to Vienna. Have you been there and can compare it to Budapest?

I don't really understand your purpose.

There are dozens of interesting things in Budapest. You know, it's only a small part of the world, what you've heard.

For example I can't list the attractions of Krakow or Warsaw, but it doesn't mean, that I regard this cities as there isn't any interesting things.

"it seems small and not entertaining to me"

No Bp isn't small.

Shopping streets...

The most famous is the "Vaci utca".

I have had my post removed because I went a bit overboard (not too much but well, community guidelines...). Sorry if someone read it I get emotional when I see people not respecting MY guidelines for travel. :-)

Tigro, I think you should go to places that interest you. If Budapest is not one of them, just forget it, shouldn't you?

I probably should, but in case the exchange rate of euro doesn't change before holidays, I'm making some kind of "backup options" ;)

"I'd like to go to a big city with both monuments and worth-visiting shops."

The first place that comes to mind for what you like (and there is nothing wrong with it - hey, everyone likes something different)...is Italy.

I think if you love a vast array of monuments, but love shopping, you should go to Rome, Venice, Milan, and Florence.
