How to say please and thankyou in Hungarian

We always like to learn a few basic words before we go.

The words for please and thank you and' where are the toilets' would be much appreciated along with any other useful phrases for tourists.

Thank you in advance.

All nice, but -- With the best will in the world, it may not be understood.. (I have tried and failed.)

'Yes' and 'No' are a good start. (I seem to have masterd those.)

You seem to be concerned about toilets. There are not a lot of free public ones in Budapest. I've never tried the few I've encountered, but I have heard that they are not very salubrious.

OTOH, there are some 'pay' (meaning a concierge who collects a fee) in some places. Museums always have them, and they are (at least in my experience) good to excellent. You can usually walk into a hotel and find them. Restaurants have them, but they obviously object to the 'walk-in' trade. Most of the toilets use the standard EU symbols for male and female. In hotels you'll find easily identifiable signs. In some museums, you might find 'F' and 'N.' 'F' is male and ''N' is female. (This may also be true at free public and paid public ones as well. )

Most guidebooks have basic vocabulary, menu decoder etc, I have the DK Insight one which is pretty comprehensive and small enough to carry around, I would recommend you get one rather than relying on what you might remeber from TA!

I have been going to Hungary for 26 years now, and have bought just about every kind of lanugage guide book available. The absolute best thing I have found is the little blue, pocket sized English-Hungarian/Hungarian-English Dictionary from Otto's Deli. Check out their home page for many goodies. But, here if you scroll down to "mini-dictionaries" is the little blue book. Fits in any pocket and will solve all your one word problems. It usually only takes one word...the right word to break the ice.

You can print your own little phrasebook for free on this site:

www.single-serving.com/Hungarian/print.php

They also have some lessons and audio files so you can hear what it's supposed to sound like.

You can also download a free language mini-course at

http://www.byki.com/

I found it interesting to know some of the numbers and colors (didn't really need them but recognized the words on ads).
