4 -5 day trip to another country suggestions

I will be in Budapest for an extended vacation and would like to take a 4 - 5 day trip, by train, to a nearby country. Seeking suggestions and comments:

- Brno area in Czech Republic (I have been to Prague)

- Western Romania

- Zagreb area in Croatia

- any other destination (possibly Belgrade)

I have been to Vienna.

Thanks.

At one time or another we have combined Budapest with Romania, Bulgaria, Slovakia, Austria, London, Paris and even Israel. For the central/eastern/southeastern countries we would get comfortable for a few days in Budapest then leave the heavy luggage there while we go out exploring - then return to Budapest, rest up, enjoy and head home. London and Paris were flight connections that we extended by a few days. Done that a couple of times.

If Romania or Bulgaria interests you i know a great guide in Romania and a pretty decent guide in Bulgaria. I will have to tell you that Bulgaria and Romania were two of the most memorable trips we have ever taken. We did Slovakia at Christmas and were impressed enough to be going back in June for a fishing trip in the High Tatras and tours of some castles.

I'll send you a link to some of the photos.

I'd look into Ljubljana. It us a beautiful tiny city, accessible by overnight train (I believe) from Budapest. From Ljubljana you can do easy day tours to Lake Bled.

I'd add Eastern Slovakia centered around Kosice. (Kosice is one of the European Cities of Culture for 2012, so there should be lots going on.)

Must it be another country? Hungary has a lot to offer.

As I am sure you have seen elsewhere, Brno is a great place and 5 days is just right for an initial visit - the next time you will want to stay :)

brno.cz/fileadmin/…Brno_1en.wmv

if you are going at the end of May/beginning of June there is a huge fireworks festival going on, which is spectacular http://www.ignisbrunensis.cz/?setLanguage=eng

Also the UNESCO world heritage site, the Tugendhat Villa, has recently re-opened after a major rebuild http://www.tugendhat.eu/en/

In addition to the above, there are the nearby caves

beautiful towns such as Mikulov

or castles such as Pernštejn

But you will need more than 5 days for all that.

A ticket to Brno by train costs €19 - buy a ticket to Prague from http://www.mav-start.hu/english/index.php and just get off in Brno. There are also buses www.studentagency.eu or www.orangeways.com

I also would recomend Slovenia, have lived and worked in Hungary for a long time and just mo ved to Piran on the Adriatic sea in Slovenia. I bring groups over from Canada and the main attraction here is within 2 hours of driving meaning 1 hour south of Ljublijana is the seaside, one hour north is the Julien Alps with Bled and Kranska Gora, and Ljubljana in the middle now being compaed to a small Paris for all of its culture! Theres a daily direct train Bud -Lj leaving noon getting in at 9pm. And both the north and south are very very easy with both train and bus service use Lj as your base and run daily visits to the places I mentioned above.

Bob, No problem. The OP was just asking for suggestions. I only suggest places I've been to and have found enjoyable.
