Lake Balaton

Hi,

we would like to go to lake Balaton in mid September for 4 days after visiting Budapest. Is the weather going to be nice at this time? Should we rent a car or go by train? We like walking on the beach, good food, some sightseeing . Where on the lake should we go?

Thank you,

Holly

The weather will be fine, though of course you can't rule out the possibility of rain, but the heat of summer should have abated somewhat.

Trains in Hungary are cheap but slow, and it very much depends what you intend to do whilst there - bear in mind that the Hungarian drink/ drive limit is ZERO.

The route to the lake is via a motorway (freeway in the US, I think), which requires a tax disc to be displayed (called the matrica). In the bad old days hire cars didn't come with it, but I believe thay do now, but check with the hire company before you set off. They can be ought a petrol stations but buy BEFORE you join the motorway as there are cameras which check.

Petrol is called benzin btw.

We used to stay on the south side when the children were young, but that was 15+ years ago: I think you may be better off on the North side, especially if you want to visit wineries. Do some searching, there are plenty of posts on this subject.

Kesthely is really nice, quite quiet. You can get a bus from there to Heviz for a day to the lovely thermal pool. The train goes to Kesthely from Budapest. Or you can get a bus from Nepliget bus station in Budapest.

Hi Holly,

A few thoughts:

- the "beach" with sand as you would expect is only along specific stretches of the lake, primarily on the southern shore. I stay on the Northside and the "beaches" are grass

- The lake is not a fancy hangout, instead open to all. So nice food in terms of restaurants can be a difficult find. There are some on the north shore, and once you have narrowed down your area, come back and we can point you to specifics.

- The trains to the lake region? Hot, uncomfortable and generally not upgraded in decades. Hire a car so you will have much greater flexibility. We enjoy the Northside in the Csopak, Balatonfured and Tihany region. Nice sights, quiet villages, etc.

September will be a nice time, especially if during the week. On weekends in good weather, the city folk still drive like maniacs to enjoy one more burst of summer.
