Family visit to Budapest in January

We are planning our visit to Budapest for beginning of January. Will be staying for two nights at La Prima Fashion Hotel, just few meters from Vaci Utca. Our 7 years old daughter will be traveling with us and we will have a car available. Any suggestions what to see, where to eat, where to shop?

'We will have a car available'

Are you hiring a car ? if all you intend to do is visit Budapest then you won't need a car, and parking would be expensive and difficult, unless the hotel has parking. Public transport in Bpest is easy to use and relatively cheap, by European standards.

For answers to your other questions, I suggest doing some searching on 'must do' and 'children' (or 'kids') - there are loads of posts on these subjects.

Is Hungary the only place you will be visiting in Europe ? the shopping is not bad, but better is to be found elsewhere - and clothes are expensive in Hungary. Will you need cold weather clothing ? shopping centres like West End or Mammut will help there.

Thanks for your reply. We will drive to Budapest and hotel made arrangements for us to park at the nearby garage. The trip to Budapest is part of our annul visit to family in Europe. We will go for a skiing holiday in Austria and visit Slovenia, as well. Originating from neighbouring country, we are familiar with weather in this part of Europe in January. I have done some research before deciding where to travel and booking the hotel, but still would like to have opinion and advise from people who have more "hands on" experience of Budapest.

If you want to shop as in browse, Vaci Utca is a low-end tourist street that the locals don't frequent. Prices are geared to liberate the tourist from their money. Same is true of many of the restaurants immediately around your hotel.

Try searching for top ten attrractions and go from there.

As for "hands on" experiece, Roman Citizen may live in Bath but he is married (I believe) to a Hungarian lady and has traveled in Hungary extensively. If his opinions do not help, I do not know where you would turn.

Thanks everyone. When I said "more hands on experience", I did not mean "more than RomanCitizen", but rather more than what you can find on usual touristy web sites. RomanCitizen, sorry if I was misunderstood. I would really like if anyone can advise me on what is actually worth doing and seeing in this short period of time. You know what I am talking about, small pastry shop hidden in a residential street rather than Gerbeaud, family owned restaurant with checkered tablecloths and great traditional food, rather then Menza. I do not mind going to Menza or Gerbeaud and will certainly make a plan to do so, but would like to see the side of Budapest that not all the tourists have a chance to see. It is very difficult to do so in such short amount of time. That is why I need your help.

Well, I am not from Budapest, and can't really help you with restaurants- we ate at Menza, and meh. However, I just spent five days in Budapest and I can suggest these, especially with children.

-Szecenyi Baths: try to block an afternoon for this, it's fun and one of the outside pools has a whirl around that your seven year old will like. There's a bar and cafe for drinks and food and you can rent a "cabin" (read closet) to change and keep your stuff in. The only pool requiring swim caps is the lap pool, so bring one if you plan to do laps, otherwise you don't need it. I recommend: swimsuit, flipflops, terry robe, towels and a disposeable camera.

-Use the metro and trams, it'll be January! A 72 hour pass really is worth it and easier for the constant checks that happen.

-Hosaks Ter (Heroes Square) is very impressive and a big square for kids to have space to run around. Nearby is the skating rink, I believe that you can rent skates, also fun for kids. The castle is beautiful and there are some cool sculptures around it for photo ops. Children can burn off some energy running in the park as well.

-Since you have car, I think that the Statue park- I'm sorry, I don't remember the proper name, but it's site outside of Budapest where they've collected all of the communist statues might be cool for your children. Some of them look big!

-The restaurants recommended to us were Menza, Klassz, The Gerloczy Cafe, as well as the New York Cafe and the Alexandra. If you're looking at Klassz,to the left and down a few steps is a pizza place that had pretty good pizza and was very reasonable. (Andrassy Ut).

Hope this helps!
