Beware of Taxis!!!

Hailed 2 cabs during our 2 day stay - we did ask for the meter - ended up over paying by 800% (We had to pay about £20 for a 5/10min cab, going down 1 main road!!!!) I'm not sure how they do it - but it was pretty extortionate - perhps best to always book with city cabs or agree a rate beforehand?- we just started using the metro, which was much faster and easier anyway! :-)

It is well documented here on this forum, and in almost every Budapest travel guide NOT to flag a taxi from the curb. They are unregulated and can charge as they please. Always call a taxi service, here or have a hotel/pub ring you a taxi OF YOUR CHOOSING, and not theirs.

Travelers need to do their homework on the basics before visiting a city.

The meters have different tariffs that the driver can choose. We got stung going from Keleti to our hotel just over the river in Buda. From then on (we only used a taxi once more) we got our hotel to book for us and the price was fixed.

Unfortunately, even though you (and us) were robbed, the law in Hungary seems to require you to pay the amount on the meter.

With all due respect, you were not robbed. You were simply poorly prepared.

The information is in every guidebook and on every travel website: as Jeremy says, Budapest taxis are unregulated, and that includes setting their meters at any rates they wish. No two taxis need have meters that run at the same rate (though all taxis owned by one of the major companies publish their rates and their meters run at those rates).

So the advice, universally, is not to hail taxis; and if you do, agree to a total fare before getting in.

Simple, safe, reliable. Perhaps not intuitive.
