Buda

We are staying at the HIlton in the Castle district at the beginning of October. I have read many posts regarding the restaurants in Buda but am still struggling to find some places to eat. Can anyone recommend a good Italian restaurant in Buda and a good international restaurant?

Mid range and fairly close to the hotel if possible please as we are travelling with elderly relatives. Many thanks

1. Re: Buda

mcwill a quick websearch reveals

tripadvisor.co.uk/Restaurant_Review-g274887-…

quite close to you

I know its not what you want to hear but personally i would swallow the cab fares and get taxis to and from the restaurants that you want to go to

no where in downtown pest would be more than 4,000fts from your HQ

far better gastronomic opportunities on the pest side

cheers tony

Since you are at the Hilton you might want to go down and down and down to the Faust Wine Cellar and do a wine tasting ---> tripadvisor.com/Attraction_Review-g274887-d1…

And almost across the street is 21 where we've had both a nice lunch, sitting outside, and a good dinner ---> http://www.21restaurant.hu/

Hi mcwil,

I live in the neighborhood of the castle district. The good news is that is a nice oasis within the city - offering a peaceful and mostly quiet neighborhood where visitors can see expansive city views both of Pest and the hills of Buda, as well as enjoy walking around the small area. The troubling news, is that there is not a long list of restaurants that fit your description. How large of an area are your traveling companions able to walk? Can they walk down stairs? The castle district sits on a small hill that, while very much in city center, is a bit of an island due to it's raised position and relatively quiet residential/small commercial that surround the immediate area.

For an international restaurant, I would suggest Speiz which sits directly across the way from the Hilton. Actually, Speiz is the only restaurant in the castle I recommend to friends, as it offers excellent fare (both local and international) with solid service, decent wine selection - and at a good value. Look for my review and others here on TA.

Others in the "neighborhood" (I mean in district 1 and NOT in the castle walls) that you can look at reviews here on TA include Deryne (backside of Castle - solid food, aloof service), Matroz Kocsma (along river on Buda side) and Márványmenyasszony Étterem (also on backside of castle). However...ALL of these are roughly .5-.75KM from the Hilton and requires walking down stairs.

As for Italian...well there isn't one I can think of close. Which leads me to Tony's earlier comment - you may want to plan for taking a taxi over to Pest to get solid Italian. Search for krizia (longtime favorite),Fausto's (really good), Pomo'doro (solid - more place to be scene). A taxi will cost approximately 2500HuF each way.
