Budapest Airport to City

We will be visiting Budapest soon and would like to know if there is a train from the airport to the city. We are staying at Hollo Ucta and don't mind walking 20-30 min from a station. Can anybody advise? Thanks.

Basically, no.

There is a train from T1 to Nyugati, but passenger tflights no longer land at T!. They all go to T2.

Do a search for 'airport transport' and you'll probably get more info than you want. (Public transport via us and Metro, shuttle bus, taxi, private transport.)

You can get from the airport to Ferihegy terminal 1 train station (old name of the airport but still used fro the station) when taking bus number 200E. The station is called "Ferihegy Vasútállomás" and the trains take you to Nyugati Pályaudvar (train station) in the city centre.. You can get a ticket for the bus either at the newspaper kiosk inside the terminal or by the driver but that is more expensive. For the train you can get a ticket either at station automat. Double check however (for example at the ticket office at the station) as some trains require "extra" ticket to be able to use it.

Or you can use 'Főtaxi' (faster option) or 'Airportshuttle' (shared-ride, takes longer but it is cheaper) as an official airporttransfer to the city. You can use these by just walking over to their reception and asking for a transfer.

Regards,

Pete

I think the intent of the post was whether one could walk directly out of the terminal, catch a train, and then be within 20-30 minutes walk of the desired location. As Hollo utca appears to be quite close to Deak ter, the cheapest way to get there would be to get the 200E bus to Kobanya Kispet and change to the blue Metro to Deak ter. Then walk from Deak ter.

I don't see anything in the OP that says they want to walk directly to the train...just that they want to take the train. Peter gives excellent advice on how to do it. In addition, the bus will get you to the train far faster than the Metro where you might have to stand up all the way into the city. On the train you ride in comfort with your luggage safely stored, you will probably get there quicker and you will have an above ground view as you enter the city. Much better. It will cost you a couple of quid more, but well worth it.

Sorry for the kerfuffle above. Ugyved is correct that the bus will get you to TI where you can take a train to Nyugati faster than the same bus will get you to the Metro. Whether the train will then get you to Nyugati faster than the bus plus Metro will get you to Deak ter is debatable.

I'd like to add that the walk from Nyugati to Hollo utca is considerably longer than that from Deak ter. From Google maps, it looks as though the distance from Deak ter is around 750 feet, while that from Nyugati would involve about a half mile walk to Deak ter and then on to Hollo utca. (It looks as though the shortest walking route from Nyugati would be going to Deak ter and then on.) The Metro at K-K shouldn't be standing room only, as that's the end of the blue line. (I believe that you can get a single transfer ticket at T2 that will include the 200E bus and the Metro.)

If you have a lot of baggage, then either the airport shuttle or Fo taxi will get you to your door - and faster than any bus-train or bus-Metro combination, although at considerably greater cost.

It should be noted that at certain times of the day you can't get a single transfer ticket. Also, since we don''t know the time of arrival it is very possible to find the metro crammed with commuters going into the city. Time of day matters.

Do note that Hollo us a 20-30 minute walk from the Nyugati station, perhaps 5 minutes from the metro stop at Deak ter.

Hello happywalker22

Actually in response to your direct question “if there is a train from the airport to the city." Peter K & ugyved2 are correct in letting you know that there is and that you can make the trip from the airport via train should you choose to do so.

What I believe oddone123 was trying to convey to you (rightly so IMHO) was a suggestion that perhaps the bus/train/walking route would not be your best or most expedient option to reach your final destination. Rather you may be better off using a combination of bus/metro/walking in order to reach your destination with greater ease.

If your flight arrives between 4:15 to 22:51 you can just take bus 200E and get off at Kõbánya-Kispest (6 stops - 22 minutes roughly from the airport) from Kõbánya-Kispest take the blue metro M3 and get off at "Deák Ferenc tér" (10 stops - 16 minutes roughly) from here you are a short 5-10 minute walk to your desired end.

For the entire trip you just need a one "transfer ticket" (Hungarian "Átszállójegy") which costs 530 forints (HUF). This ticket must be validated twice: the first time on the bus and a second time at the beginning of the journey on the metro/subway.

If you can’t find a “transfer ticket” you can just opt for two single tickets 350 (HUF) each, (one for the bus and one for the metro).

At the airport you can buy tickets in both terminal 2A & 2B from the BKK (public transport company) customer service counters. In 2A there is a small desk in the central hall which is located next to the door that leads to the baggage claim hall on the right. It is open from 8:00 am to 20:00 every day. The point of sale location in 2B is a full service office and is located behind the information desk. This is open from 6:00 am to 22:00 every day. With the difference in opening hours it means that between the hours of 6 am and 8 am or between 20:00 and 22:00 you will need to take a walk to terminal 2B to purchase tickets, if your flight arrives in 2A. bkk.hu/en/…

At both locations you can pay with HUF or with credit card. Additionally at both locations you can also purchase 24/72 hour & 7 day travel cards if you intend to use public transportation while in the city which you should probably buy at the outset, in order to amortize the cost of the transfer to the city center. http://www.bkk.hu/en/prices/

Here is a map showing the bus/metro/walking route to your end location. https://goo.gl/maps/AJ6qJ

So bottom line is yes there is a train available at the airport to get you into the city but you would be better served by using the bus/metro/walking route that oddone123 was referencing since it will get you to your desired destination with having to walk the shortest distance.

Best
