17 days in Hungary - help with planning

Hi im travelling to Hungary in August and will be there for 17 days, we have been before but loved it so much we are going for a longer holiday plus we will be visiting family also.

We will be staying in Budapest for 6 days then travelling by car to Eger and Gyongyos for 6 days then 5 days back in Budapest. There will be 3 adults and 1 child. As you will see below we like swimming and doing fun things, not too keen on being indoors when the weather is good outside.

I have a few things planned, but just want to check if im missing anything that is a must see, or anything we haven't done before that could be a good addition to our trip.

When we have been before we have visited the Opera House, fishermans Bastion, the fine art museum, the science museum (palace of miracles when it was in the city centre), circus, szechenyi baths, Margaret Island baths, the zoo. We have been to lake Balaton in previous years and been to Balaton Sound festival, We have also been to the ruin pubs which we like. We have been to see the Mammoth in the museum in Gyongyos, and only been to the swimming baths in Eger. Any ideas what to do in Gyongyos or Eger would be great.

Upto now I have planned

Visit to szezenchenyi baths

visit to watch the circus

Visit to the Margaret Island baths

Heroes square

Zoo

Please let me know what im missing off as I know there is lots for us to see and do!!

Well, while in Gyöngyös, you can drive through it. That city is about as touristy as a rock. You can check its Wikipedia page, but nothing on that list you'll find there seems interesting:

Rawlee is being too harsh, there is a very nice restaurant in Gyongyos, on the left soon after you enter town: eat, THEN you can drive through it.

Seriously, have you booked somewhere to stay in Gyongyos ? there ain't a lot there, but not far north of there is the Ozon Hotel, which we stayed in a few years back. I believe it has been modernised, but it has lovely grounds and is surrounded by lovely forest, with great views.

Have you booked somewhere in Eger ? the Nomad in Noszvaj, few miles outside Eger, has a pool, and again is surrounded by nice forests - but also wineries !

Welcome to the forums, Charlotte. I suspect that perhaps the reason you are going to Gyongyos is that is where your relatives live? Now that the town has been disparaged, please be assured there some very worthwhile things to see and do for those who understand or wish to learn about what is there. There is a charming town square for a casual stroll and sidewalk cafes. Gyongyos has an antique rail line with a tiny train. Worth a look. The thing that stands out most about the town is the churches. In addition to the really fine Baroque Catholic church, you will see and explore fine examples of nearly every religion to be found in Hungary. They are all close by and are perfect to learn how to distinguish each group. After that, you can drive all over Hungary and know which religion predominates in any village you will drive through.

Happy Trails!!!

The area around Miskolc is worth paying a visit, as is the other parts of northern Hungary. Miskolc is about a 1,5 hour's drive from Eger. Here are a few places in and around the city.

Diósgyőr castle: https://goo.gl/maps/8a0MP

You might want to take a dip in the Cave Bath (Barlangfürdő) at Miskolctapolca: https://goo.gl/maps/oSBMW

Lillafüred: https://goo.gl/maps/v9bJo

Lillafüred is on the road going up into the Bükk mountains. There is a stalactite cave called the Anna cave. (https://goo.gl/maps/C7fcE). You can try boat rowing on the lake Hámori, just next to the Hunguest Hotel Palota. Kids love the narrow gauge railway with the steam locomotive, offering a one-hour (plus the way back) ride through the forest.

The Bükk mountains are ideal for outdoor activities, hiking, etc.

Here is a map of hiking routes in the Bükk mountains:

An other alternative is to drive through the mountains from Eger to Miskolc and back and stop at a few places to have a general idea of the area.

Good post strayd0g. Another place to consider is Szilvasvarad. Dine on fresh trout from the streams, learn how to ride a prancing Lipizzaner, or take coach driving lessons. Hike in the pure mountain air and explore the caves. Ride the narrow gauge railroad. Also worth a visit is the ancient monastery at Belapatfalva. You can get to them either from Eger or Miskolc.
