Zakopane -Slovakia, routes +places to stay

Hi,

We are a family from Norway who were in Zakopane In Poland last February and enjoyed it very much, we tried most of the slopes/lifts in Zakopane. We plan to return this year, but this time we would like to drive Zakopane- Slovakia to experience the slopes in Slovakia (Tatras), do you have any recommendations regarding:

- which car route to choose (we rent cars in Krakow)?

-where to stay?

- lifts/slopes (we are all experiences skiers and enjoy challenges),

Dan

Hi - as you suggest Krakow is not far from the Slovak border and is probably a drive of less than 2 hours.

The main town on the Slovak side is Poprad which offers easy access to the ski resorts at the base of the Tatras. As you have transport you can check out the local snow conditions and head to which ever resort offers the best sking.

If driving direct from Krakow I would give more time than that - more like 4 hours plus as the Polish roads and the driving habits there are not great, particularly as you approach the border, and in the winter they can be treacherous. Past Nowy Targ there are no signs to Slovakia, just to Lysa Polana, and it is very easy to miss it. Then you have to take it easy on the Slovak side as well but being from Norway you should be used to snow driving, but maybe not used to having buses/lorries and other vehicles coming at you in the middle of the road the other way!

Take a good map and (preferably) a decent navi.

From Zakopane it is definitely a good 2 hours and the roads are winding and poorly marked.

Where to stay in Zakopane? No question about it tripadvisor.com/ShowTopic-g274793-i4087-k296…

In Slovakia, for a family it might be a good idea to have a look here http://www.limba.com/en/slovakia/offer.htm

The best skiing is in the Low Tatras (Jasná, etc) http://www.skislovakia.sk/

Good luck!

The best skiing area close to Zakopane is West Tatras area , Zuberec -Zverovka . It is around 60 km from Zakopane. Go cross border crossing Sucha Hora, then to Oravice, where is chair lift slope /easy/ just 100 m at the thermal all year outdoor swimming resort with hot water - take a swim bath! From this place continue to Zuberec and next to Zverovka- Spalena. There is alpine style area with best snow condition in Tatras area with wirgin nature park, without many hotels. Nice slopes with 5 lifts and 2 chair lift with snow till april.

If you need the accomodation in Zuberec, there are plenty private lodgings and pensions or in Zverovka is the best place to stay Horsky Hotel Osobita /around 45 Euro per persons with buffet breakfast/. The hotel is very close to the skiing area. If you are there, you MUST see very nice outdoor museum of slovak archaic architecture /skanzen /with plenty of wooden houses, open all year round in Zverovka.
