Budapest to Slovakia

We are going to be in Budapest for 9 days in October 2011. We want to take a day trip to either Bratislava or Krakow. We were thinking about hiring a private tour guide for 1 day to do one of these tours. What sites would you recommend to see on the way? What sites are there to see in Krakow or Bratislava?

We like nature, historical sites and I am interested in the concentration camps from Eastern Europe.

Any help with this is greatly apprecaited.

Thank you

Krakow is an 11 hour plus journey by overnight train from Budapest, so it isn't really a day trip.

Bratislava is closer - about 2.5 hours, and costs €16 return. You can see the sights in about an hour, then sit and have a coffee and cake (however in October there will be little or no outdoor seating) and return on the next train, no problem. You wouldn't really need a private tour guide as this pretty much covers it http://www.bratislava.info/attractions/

Other trips you might consider from Budapest: Gyor, Sopron, Eger, for example. A bit further than Bratislava, but much more picturesque and more to see, is Košice http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ko%C5%A1ice - there is a direct early train at 0630 taking 3 hours 15 minutes, returning in the evening at 1806. Košice is due to be European Capital of Culture in 2013 and is well worth a visit. Again, buy the ticket on the day - about €29 return.

I agree completely with GCEK. Krakow is totally out of the question for a day trip.

Krakow is the big place for concentration camps. (Auschwitz.) Doing that properly from Krakow will take a whole day. If you really want to do that, plan on two nights in Krakow, and one day each for getting to and from Budapest.
