New to Slovakia - help with itinerary please

We would be grateful for help on planning our trip in this region. We are likely to fly from England to Vienna and we definitely want to do some hiking in the High Tatras but are struggling with a good itinerary for 12-14 days. We thought something like... Vienna for a night or two, then Bratislava for a night, then High Tatras (Kosice?), then Spis castle, then Budapest and then back to Vienna. But it would be nice to go to some places inbetween or to get recommendations for some other places. Is it easy to visit Krakow from the HIgh Tatras? And how to travel? Is a car necessary? It would be nice to go by train or bus but is it expensive? And how do you get around without a car in the High Tatras?

So lots of questions! But any advice would be much appreciated. Thank you.

Hi - it already sounds like you have the bare bones of a great trip. The itinerary sounds great for two weeks, and trains would be fine for the most part.

TRANSPORT

Vienna - Bratislava. Bus is about 8 Euro

Bratislava is worth 2 full days out of 2 weeks in my opinion, then 5 hour train to Poprad. Train costs about 15 to 20 Euro, buy on the day

From Poprad you can get anywhere in the High Tatras on the Tatra Electric Railway (TEZ)... tickets are about a Euro I guess

There are trains from Kosice (close to Tatras) to Budapest. Probably costs about 15 Euro

BP to BA by train is 17.50, or take a cheaper bus.

helpful website is cp.sk. It shows all bus and train connections

Take a look at website hiking.sk. You'll see a tourist map on top right of webpage. Zooming in shows all the hiking trails. Pick a village near many good trails, check it's on TEZ route, then use google or limba.sk to find a place to stay. Easy!

Many additional nice places in the East... maybe you want to rent a car, but it's doable by bus/train. Kosice and Presov are nice cities, and Slovensky Raj has amazing hiking and nature.

Krakow isn't the easiest to get to... maybe look at Brno as a side trip from Bratislava?

Budapest is packed full of stuff to do - a truly great city. Make sure you leave plenty of days

If you go to Poprad and Kosice, you can stop by Spis Castle. It will be a nice walk from back side. Also there are many castles in Slovakia so you would enjoy the views.

I definitely recommend going to East Slovakia where is still simple but pure and not so commercialized yet compared to West Slovakia. Levoca, Bardejov, Presov and Kosice are must.

Hi 5onholiday, sorry to tag on to your thread.

Does anyone have any idea how to get from Banska Stiavnica to Krakow? Or is there a reliable door-to-door service? I wrote to 2 companies (Mike's chauffeur service & one other from Bratislava page) but no reply from them. Any advice appreciated. Thanks very much!

Hi again. I tried searching for "easy private taxi.com" on this website but couldn't find anything. Does anyone have any idea about them if they are ok? Thanks again!

Why don't you try to call? It saves your time rather than waiting for response by e-mail.
