Central Europe

Hi all

I am planning a Central Europe trip in Oct this year as I will be heading to Kosice, Slovakia for business. Traveling with my wife.

I have not confirmed the airports that I will be flying in and out, but have targeted Vienna as it seemed to be the nearest to Kosice and more airlines flew there (translating to a cheaper flight). An alternative will be the German airports.

Looking to visit the following cities:

Austria: Vienna, Salzburg

Czech Republic: Brno, Prague

Slovakia: Bratislava

I will have 11 days till I reached Kosice for travel.

Starting point like Vienna.

I am looking at train travel.

1. Can I understand what will be the suggested route for the above cities?

2. How many days in each of them?

3. I tried to find out whether it is worthwhile to buy Eurail or point to point directly from the Country railway websites, however, most of them do not provide the fare for cross country travel. Will you be able to provide an estimate cost for the train fare (looking at first class seats and for overnight train, a 2 bed sleeper.

4. I understand that the travel from Prague to Kosice will need an overnight train. If I buy the tickets on the spot at Prague train station, will it be too late i.e. fully sold out (as I am looking at the 2 bed sleeper.

TIA.

The closest airport is Kosice Airport. You have to travel over 6 hours from Vienna by train or car. FYI, closer airports are Budapest or Krakow. There is one in Tatra but this would be more seasonal and regional specified.

No need to get Eurorail as individual tickets would much cheaper. Probably it would be too much to visit all cities listed. Vienna and Prague should deserve a couple days each...

You shouldn't worry much about tickets being sold out in October.

Hi Normad

I am more likely to fly into the major airports to save on air fares.

The major airports close to Kosice and cheaper to fly to are probably Munich, Vienna and Prague?

Probably Budapest?

Budapest airport lost a lot of transit traffic after the bankruptcy of Hungarian national carrier, so I would recommend to fly to Vienna.

Your trip might look like this:

3 days for Vienna, train to Salzburg

2 days in Salzburg, return to Vienna, then shuttle train to Bratislava

1 day Bratislava, then train to Brno

1 day in Brno, then train to Praha, upon arrival book tickets for train to Kosice

3 days in Prague, then take night train to Kosice

I don't think it is worthwhile to buy Eurail, it is better to buy tickets for individual trips. You can always purchase your tickets for the next trip at the station as you arrive from the previous trip.Unfortunately, international tickets are usually not available for online purchase, but I'm adding some links to pages of local railway companies for you to check.

Vienna - Salzburg return 50-100 EUR depending on train and time - check www.oebb.at

Vienna-Bratislava 15 EUR - buy at the ticket machine at the station, shuttle service - no booking needed

Bratislava-Brno approx 10 EUR - buy at Bratislava station

Brno-Praha approx 10 EUR - check https://www.cd.cz/eshop/default.aspx

Praha-Kosice approx 30 EUR - check https://www.cd.cz/eshop/default.aspx
