Skiing in Slovakia cheaper than Austria?

We are two families with 4 adults and 3 kids and thinking of having a ski week in Austria or in Slovakia around Christmas. We are thinking of Jasna in Slovakia and some other places in Austria. I was thinking Slovakia could be cheaper, but one of my Slovak friend told me that Tatras is in no way cheaper than Austria and he would rather recommend Austria considering the quality of service we could get at the same price. His opinion is that the Tatras is overpriced with the recent hordes of tourists. I am not sure how objective his opinion since he said he didn't have ski holidays himself in the Tatras.

Considering the cottage rentals and dining out and hiring skis and lift fees, is the Tatras really more expensive than Austria?

Overall Austria might be cheaper as you can find more options and deals.

Every Slovak I've met says that Austria is the better choice. Similar prices yet much better facilities. Not sure if it's the truth or just Slovak pessimism though.

I do not think Austria is cheaper then Lower Tatras /ski, food, accomodation/ but offers much more possibilities for GOOD skier. For bigginers who do not look for top black slopes is Slovakia OK and offer good conditions / look for Skipark Ruzomberok, Donovaly, Vratna or West Tatras Zuberec / smaller but comfortable resorts with much better prices then Jasna.

Very subjective topic. I agree that for those not looking for extreme thrill, Slovakia offers good deal. I often go to Litmanova to break the season.

Thanks for suggestions. So is Slovak pessimism playing a part here?

We are just at beginner levels and mostly we want to introduce skiing to children. So green, blue and red combination is ok. Moreover it will be better if we can find some not so expensive but nice food and warm, clean and hospitable accommodation evening for family gathering.

It depends what you want and looking for. If you want to ski as much as possible without limits and breaks go to Austria. If you want to skiing, drinking, relaxing, sunbathing, go to ski in Slovakia and much better prices you will have outside High Tatras (Vratna, Ski park Ruzomberok, Oscadnica.... etc)

If you are from Holland, deffinitely you will like area of Zuberec /West Tatras,. It is the traditional willage with lot of not very difficult slopes just in the village or in close National park. There is a hot spring there with all year open air aquapark, nice big museum of traditional architecture with daily program, nice close castle for relax day etc...And you have snow guarantee from december till march

This winter there wasn't a lot of snow in Austria and temperatures were high (like +6+10 at 2000 m level. What about Slovakia?

This winter was the worst skiing season for many years. Only ski resorts with snow guns in northern Slovakia had some slopes open. This winter was realy hot - only some days had temperature below zero.
