Train from Budapest to Kosice

We are planning on taking the IC train from Budapest to Kosice, but it looks like they only run twice a day, leaving at 6:00 or 18:00. If we take the 18:00 train, it arrives in Kosice about 21:30. Is this later train a safe option, and if we take it, would it be best to take a taxi to our hotel in the old city district or is it safe to walk?

Horse Inn looks good, is reasonably priced and it's in a great spot.

The walk from the railway station should take no longer than 5 minutes as Horse Inn is at the right end and on the right side of the Main Street, but you have to cross edge of the city park. The park is lit and there should be people around at that time, too, so I'd just take the (tiny) risk rather than getting a taxi. Kosice is generally a very safe city.

Another pension close to Horse Inn is Pension Slovakia. Their rates are good and it's relatively new:

I had a look at some of the rooms and almost booked a group of friends in there but they couldn't accommodate everybody so we went elsewhere.

Interestingly, the rooms don't have numbers but are named after Slovak cities :)

I hope this helps!

Besides those two (morning and evening one) direct InterCity trains Kosice-Budapest, there is also another option, it's a bit longer in travel time, but cheaper and works the whole day. Idea is simple: you board local train from Kosice to Slovenske Nove Mesto (an hour ride + 3 euro), it's located just opposite (actually historically it's the same town) to Hungarian town Sátoraljaújhely, from where multiple trains run to Budapest (around 4 hours + 4500 HUF). Sátoraljaújhely itself is a nice and historic place, so easily possible to spend extra few hours on sightseeing there.

Taking the train via Slovenske Nove Mesto / Sátoraljaújhely is worth considering for another reason: you can spend a couple of hours in the Tokaj wine region of Slovakia. Check out: http://www.tokajregnum.sk/en/ or visitkosice.eu/en/…unique-tokaji-wine-cellars

Kosice-Budapest-Kosice by EC train will be 20 euro, while Kosice-Budapest via Slovenské Nové Mesto/Sátoraljaújhely is 3,18 euro for the Slovak leg & from 4840 forints (app.16,5 euro) for the Hungarian leg, both prices are one-way, so double it for return journey

Košice-Budapest-Košice by EC is 20EURO/roundtrip (see slovakrail.sk/sk/…madarsko.html , in Slovak). The only downside is that you cannot make a seat reservation in Košice, so you might end up standing from Miskolc on (the train doesn't get packed before that). I think when you buy the ticket in Budapest (i.e., when you buy Budapest-Košice-Budapest) they will try make you buy a seat reservation for additional few EUR. BUt, actually, it's not required, if you're traveling all the way to Košice (however, it is required if you're traveling within Hungary - rather confusing).
