Drving from Prague to Kosice

What would driving to/from Kosice from Prague be like? Is it easy to cross the border with a rental? I know that taking a train is probably the best but we need to minimize the travel time. All advice is welcome!

Thanks

Both countries are part of Schengen area, so unless there is some emergency, you will pass through border crossing without stopping. As for the route, it's all highways or 1st category roads, so you should have no problems. You will need both Czech and Slovak highway toll stickers (available at gas stations, the least expensive stickers are for 10 days) - don't forget to write the license plate number of the car on the sticker (Czech sticker) or attached coupon (Slovak sticker) where required.

Usual route would be E50 - Praha-Brno on D1 highway, then through Uherske Hradiste and Trencin, in Trencin go to Slovak D1 direction Zilina, then Poprad, Presov and Kosice. - 7-8 hours of net time + necessary stops - so it would be good to have more drivers on board. You will see some nice scenic views on the route.

Driving would take about the same time as the train or bus, maybe longer if you add in breaks which you are bound to take, getting lost, etc, but it would be a lot more expensive and stressful.

On the overnight train you save on a hotel/sightseeing time and you get a comfortable bed for €32

The bus has wi-fi (in Czech Republic), in-seat movies, free refreshments, power points, etc www.studentagency.eu studentagency.cz/jizdenky/videa/index.html (€21.50)

Maybe not a bad idea, just not the cheapest/quickest/most comfortable/efficient :)

We took the train from Kosice to Prague last summer and it was fantastic. If you are willing to go during the day you will get to see a quiet a bit of both countries. It is easier to travel if you buy a ticket for a train that does not requier to switch a train along the way.

You need to make sure to have proper papers for cross border renting. Also you need to purchase vignette if you plan to take highways for both countries as others mentioned.

Highway on Czech side is bumpy as it is aging whilst in the Slovak side, highway is not complete so you might need to take some local road.

The best option is to fly. CSA Czech Airlines offers round trips Prague-Kosice-Prague starting at 100EUR http://sk.csa.cz/ (currently the cheapest is 130EUR). Driving is a good option. You can do the Czech part on a highway and then avoid driving through the Slovak towns where the highway is missing by going like this http://binged.it/1ezMXuc . Train is a reasonable option too, but it's 8.5-11 hrs, while you can make it much faster by driving (7hrs or less) if you avoid the rush hour.

By train you should be asleep for most of it, plus it goes centre to centre ...
