Estonia itinerary advice

Hello!

I am planning a trip to Estonia for me and my boyfriend in late August.

We wont have a car so we will have to rely on public transport.

I have no idea how to organise the trip so that it covers all important places one should visit when in Estonia. I want to see the capital (2-3 days there) and some other important town and we would also like to spend some time on an island (1 or 2 nights), we would also like to visit Narva. We would stay in Estonia 11, 12 days and than take a bus to Riga.

Please, if you have any ides how to organise the trip, let me know. Thanks a lot.

Here's a rough outline to get you started. Read up on these destinations and decide what to include/discard according to your tastes. http://www.visitestonia.com/en/ is a good place to start.

From Tallinn head for Narva, then continue south to Tartu with a possible stop at Rakvere before or after Narva. The quaint island of Saaremaa might come next, with a quick visit to Haapsalu for its castle. Then Pärnu, from which it's a short hop to Riga.

It's quite heavy going by bus but doable. You can check out buses here: http://www.tpilet.ee/en? I've only once taken the train to Narva and found it painfully slow, though my companion enjoyed the Soviet grubbiness.

If you have no problem getting up early, you can take the Tallinn - Narva - Sint Petersburg train between Tallinn and Narva. The bus takes 3 hours, this train 2h45min: http://www.gorail.ee/?id=1672 (on the left of the blue station name is arrival time, on the right of it departure time).

As for islands, I know that some of the accommodation offerers actually offer pick-up from bus station or ferry.

On Saaremaa I know that http://www.loonamanor.ee/?keel=eng does that.

The owner of that manor also does heritage tours, which most of the people I've had over here have loved a lot! http://www.parimusmatkad.ee/eng

Just on a side note: Renting a car might not be a lot more expensive than going everywhere by public transport. Here's one that I use often: http://www.1autorent.ee/prices

Of course don't expect a nice driving experience with that old Renault Clio which is their cheapest car :p.

Thank you both for the information.

Do you have idea how much time to spend in Narva? Are there some interesting places nearby?

A day is more than enough for most visitors, more like half. After you've seen the castle and its view of Russia across the river, that's about it. Rakvere's a good place to go on to.

We would like to spend some time on an island, probably on Saaremaa.

Are there any companies organising tours around the island?Or dou you know if public transport operates there?

Public transport does indeed operate on Saaremaa, and I've found it quite easy to get around by bus there. This website has some good background info: www.saaremaa.ee/index.php…
