Trip to Saaremaa

We'll be spending a week in August on Saaremaa. Any advice on what to see and do? We are staying at one of the "holiday" houses (farms?) in the country - anyone know what that might be like? Also, driving a rental from Tallinn to Saaremaa - how's the ferry crossing?

Hello Alex,

Thanks for your interest to Tallinn, please check you e-mail.

What about Saaremaa. Very good choice to feel Estonia.

Holiday houses (farms) have been established for people and others who like to travel around in nature on their own. As a rule they are located away from public roads and settlements. The houses have a simple construction and "Spartan" interior (a table, a seat, a stove-bench, a fireplace). Some of them are modern enough and have all necessaries for comfortable rest.

Saaremaa has a lot of places deserving tourist attention (architecture, museums, nature). See more information on http://www.saaremaa.ee.

Ferry connection between continent and island is good. Ferries time-table see on http://www.laevakompanii.ee

Tanya

Spent a day out on Saaremaa recently and it's a really nice place. Dont know if there's a weeks wort of entertainment though. But we didnt have time to investigate too much.

Take a trip out to the lighthouse at the end of the island, It's really nice out there.

Drive the Road along the coast back.

Visit the Kaali Crater Formed by a meteorite impact.

Oh and the Ferry was fine, About 70 EEK per person as i recall. We missed one and had to wait about 30 mins for the next. So they are fairly regular

IIRC the ferry takes you over to a smaller island (you then drive from there over a bridge to Saaremaa) first which has a heritage village on it. Have a look at this site for more ideas

www.saaremaa.ee/eng/tourism/default.htm

We drove from Tallinn to Saaremaa back in 1994, the island had only just opened up - it was out of bounds due to military stuff in 'the former times', and had no problems with either the road or ferry - with the growth of tourism I can only assume things have got easier.

A picnic by the lighthouse previouslt mentioned is excellent - the island just comes to an end with sea coming in from both sides.

As for what to expect - nothing awe inspiring but lots of old rural villages, windmills etc. The sea and land are pretty flat but there's atmosphere. Dump the car and do some walking around.
