hi,

it depends on what you are looking for and how far are you ready to drive. Jurmala has great beaches in means of white and fine sand. It has lots of dining opportunities. But it can be crowded and loud, especially central part. So if you prefer something more quiet you can drive out of Jurmala along the coastline in the direction of Kolka. These places will have nice scenery and the beach will be quiet and rugged though not as wide. Kolka itself is worth visiting as the sea and gulf meet there. Further afield there are good beaches on western coast (Liepaja, Ventspils which have blue flag) and places between them (Pavilosta, Jurkalne). Jurkalne is special in the way that you can see high coast (sand cliffs whith narrow strip of beach below, still suitable for little kids).

Enjoy!

Hello.

if you do not to travel to far from Riga and are interested in exploring other beaches beside those of Jurmala, I would recomend going by the beach to the direction of Tallinn.

Places such as Saulkrasti, Vecaki, Kalngale and Garciems, Carnikava might be of interest to you, they are usually less crowded then Jurmala.

Saulkrasti and Carnikava are small towns, while other places are just beaches close to the summer houses of the locals. Wonderfully beautiful and peaceful nature there. And the ride from Riga is about as long as the one to Jurmala. ( you just go to another direction). Take P1 road from Riga

Great, thanks guys for your feedback. Very helpful. We are considering arriving in Riga and departing from Tallin, or the otherway, doesn't really matter. Basically we are after a beach holiday with child friendly activities plus cultural sight seeing along the way. Given the size of the country, it seems nothing is really too far away.

Hello Melanie,

If you are driving along coast towards Tallinn (or from Tallinn), you can manage to visit sea, where there are sandy beaches and sandstone outcrops together. There are few campsites in this part of coast, for example krimalnieki.lv/Kontakti-kempings-Krimalnieki… and www.kempingi.lv/default.php…

If not willing to drive far from highway, you can stop at the Vitrupe river, where parking lot and beach is located close to the road; as it is far from Riga, beach is not overcrowded either.
