Trains in and out of Riga

We want to travel from Russia right through to Frankfurt by train. On the official Russian train timetable site we found a train that apparently leaves St Petersburg every night and arrives in Riga in the morning. Could someone please confirm if this train is still running.

Is it possible to go from Riga to Tallinn by train?

Thanks in advance

Hi Jean and Ian.

Yes, the train St Petersburg - Riga is running regularly.

No, there is no train connection between Riga and Tallinn, only couches.

Small correction: It is possible to travel between Riga and Tallinn over Valga-Tartu with train changes, but this takes long time, and bus (travel time about 5 hours) or air is better.

You are welcome!

To interject: you were right at first - there is no Tallinn-Riga train. Estonian trains do not operate between Tartu and Valga at the moment.

They finishing Tartu-Valga line reconstruction at the moment, so pretty soon it is promised that trains will run up to 120km per hour on that line ;)

Why not 120km/h? (it is projected speed after reconstruction on whole Tartu-Valga line)

Plus consider projects like Rail Baltica etc. Maybe they will even renew Balti express connection ;)

It is a pity to look how all the rail transport in Baltic countries being marginalized - I would prefer to use train instead of bus, even it the it takes a little bit longer...

I wish myself that Baltic Express still existed! It would be great to be able to take trains everywhere. There used to be a Tartu-Kaunas train and so on. Rail Baltica has been postponed for now. Tartu Valga will be reistated by 2010 I believe, then it is only a matter of time before Tartu - Riga and Tallinn-Riga is reintroduced... only two years ago was when they got rid of the Riga-Vilnius train connection.

"...Rail Baltica has been postponed for now..."

Hmmm. Didn't hear such news, maybe it has been postponed in Estonia? So far, in LT everything is going according to the plan. Agreements with Germany and Poland exist, the "european" rail section between the PL/LT border and Marijampolė (LT) should be completed until 2013/2014. Last month there was certified a winner of the competition of the "Rail Baltica" project. It will be a new railroad, as the present one is pretty winding and "zig-zagging", there is not much sense to reconstruct it. And so up to Kaunas. And on to Riga and Vilnius, just here it will be the reconstruction, not the new road. Will take time, but not too much, taking into account all complexity. So chins up, friends ;)

Situation with Rail Baltica is kind of tricky - not all the reconstruction belongs to that project.

Already mentioned Tartu-Valga line reconstructed so to say "separately", same thing (as far as I know) applies to Kaunas tunnel project etc.

So it is hard to determine what about precise Rail Baltica project done and what is regular rail works in place.
