Marlborough Sounds or Abel Tasman?

Hello,

We are planning to visit New Zealand on our honeymoon in November. We plan to arrive in Picton on the ferry from Wellington on 22nd Nov. We'd then have the remainder of the 22nd, all of the 23rd and part of the 24th free. We have done lots of research and are now torn between exploring the Marlborough Sounds or pushing on over to Abel Tasman National Park.

We'd appreciate any advice as to which would be the better option as well as ideas on places to stay.

Thanks in advance,

Roscoeroo.

Find a way to do both! Both beautiful, but different. Tasman bay has the golden sand beaches, Malborough Sounds has the bush clad hills rising out of the sea. Both have organised boat trips, kyacks and bush walks. If you did both, it definitely is not 2 lots of the same thing.

Otherwise, flip the coin!

Abel Tasman is a National Park - therefore not developed. beaches are beautiful with golden sand. Very little accommodation other than camping or huts. Access is readily available by water taxi.

QCS is mostly private land - bays contain houses ("baches) and there are very few actual beaches, a "sound" being an eroded valley, the hills drop straight into the sea. Several pleasant lodges with water-only access.

We loved both experiences, you can't make a bad decision here. Abel Tasman was amazing when we were there. We hiked, sea kayaked on a beautiful day and we were able to splurge on the lodge located in the park. In the Queen Charlottes we took a boat to Ship's Cove and hiked for a day. We hope to return one day and spend several days hiking the path and staying at the small lodges along the way. The boat will transport your luggage between your stops. If you chose the Marlborough Sounds, you will maximize your time as you are already in Picton where the boat picks you up.

I personally love both areas, but as it's your honeymoon, you might consider a splash out at the Bay of Many Coves in the Marlborough Sounds. It's only accessible by boat, and although it's not right on the Queen Charlotte Track, you can easily reach the track via water taxi for day hikes from the resort. Fantastic place and they might be offering specials in November as it's low season.

Alternatively, you could head over to Abel Tasman. If you have a car, there are many lodging options - Marahau is right at the doorstep of the park, Kaiteriteri Beach is a short drive from Marahau (lots of B&Bs), the town of Motueka is about 15 minutes away, and the wine growning region of Upper Moutere is about 30 minutes away. Loads to do in this area.

You might also consider staying right in Abel Tasman at Awaroa Lodge (accessible by boat, helicopter and on foot only)

Both are good options, but I'd only do one.

Many thanks for all of the replies. We're still not sure what to do so I guess we'll flip that coin!

Thanks again,
