Picton- Wellington ferry in Oct/ Nov

Is it already too late to enjoy the surrounding scenery if I were to board the Picton-Wellington ferry at 6pm in Oct/ Nov?

What would be the best time to board the ferry, in order to best enjoy the scenery around??

As I intend to do whale watching in Kaikoura the same morning at 7.15am, what is the option available for Picton- Wellington ferry trip if I were to catch it the same day, due to limited time?

Is there more than 1 ferry operator, other than Interislander Ferry?

There is also the Bluebridge ferry http://www.bluebridge.co.nz/

If departing Picton at 6pm and assuming both weather and visibility is good, then it is a lovely time to sail. The best views are, I think, as you pass through the Sounds before hitting the Strait and the late afternoon light will be gorgeous. Then as you enter Wellington Harbour you will have the lights of the city spread out before you.

Magical :)

I'm with WL on that. What a way to finish the day, regardless of the weather. By ferry is probably the best way to arrive in Wellington.
