I always change some of my money at the airport, so I have money for tipping, and change ther rest as I need it at the resort.

I've never found need for much money in Cuba, as there isn't really anything to buy. coins for tipping, and enough for trips, usualy exchanged at the airport.

Remember that you loose a considerable amount to change your money back, so try to only get what you need.

I would leave the travelers cheques at home - take Canadian bills - make sure they are in good condition with no rips, tears, writing, bank stamps, tape, etc. on them. We usually change some at the airport, I wait for the luggage and hubby goes to the arrival hall to the cadeca and changes some CDN to CUC. We usually change $100 at the airport simply to make sure we have the $25 CUC per person departure tax right off the bat - we put that in the safe at the resort along with our passports when we arrive.

If you don't feel you have time to change some money, you can still buy beer at the airport with Canadian however, most importantly - do not bother taking loonies and toonies - they are useless in Cuba.
