Montgomery for a stop over.

Hi there, we will be travelling from New Orleans to Covington, GA and we're planning on two stop-overs of one night each, the first being in Fairhope. Would Montgomery be a good place for our second night? What kind of place is it and what might be interesting to see there? Also any recommendations of a good mid-price hotel and nice family restaurant - we'd like to try southern food./barbeque (our children will be 16, 12 and 9) would be wonderful. Any other ideas where we could stay other than the above places?

When will you be making the trip? That will help determine the best places to stop. I like Fairhope as an option. Can't suggest any places to stay, eat or see because it has been a long time since I have been there. Montgomery has a lot of historical sites to see related to the Civil Rights movement. It may be a little more than mid-price, but the Renaissance hotel downtown is very nice. Nearby is Dreamland BBQ which is famous for its ribs.

An alternative might be Callaway Gardens in Pine Mountain, GA. It is a couple hours past Montgomery on the way to Covington. They have a hotel and restaurants on site. The butterfly sanctuary is amazing!

We're thinking September. Hope that won't be a problem with hurricane season but you never know with those sorts of things anyway, do you? We looked at some of the smaller towns but hotel reviews left a bit to be desired in many of them.

I second Callaway Gardens. Nice lodging. Pine Mountain has lodging options too and a cute downtown. Only slightly out of your way!!

Yes Callaway Gardens would be a good option and if you have a little time then go over to FD Roosevelt's Little White House and Historic pools. Eat lunch at the Bulloch House daily or for dinner on Friday and Sat. nights. This is good southern comfort food on an all you can eat buffet.
