Mobile vs Montgomery

Our family is traveling from California to do a road trip from Charleston to New Orleans. Mobile, AL would be 'on the way', however is it worth adding 2 1/2 hours to our total drive time to go up to Montgomery? I am thinknig the Civil Rights history in Montgomery will be very rich. Please share your thoughts.

Birmingham has a great Civil Rights museum, but its a 4 hour drive. I don't know anything about Montgomery. While in Mobile, drive across the bay and visit Fairhope. It will give you a good feeling about Alabama.

Montgomery would be a good stop for an overnight on the way to New Orleans. There is lots to see related to Civil Rights, especially in the downtown area. Another option on the way to Montgomery would be a stop in Tuskegee which is less than an hour east of Montgomery. The route I would take would be from Charleston to Macon to Columbus to Tuskegee to Montgomery. You may want to break that up with a night in Macon.

I really like Mobile. Montgomery does have a lot to see related to Civil Rights but I think Mobile has a lot more to offer. There's a great museum at the Battleship Alabama. And Fairhope is an interesting town to visit. There's some neat shops and restaurants there.

Mobile has some great restaurants. If you stop at the Battleship Museum go to John Word's for great seafood next door.

The trip to NOLA along the MS Gulf Coast can be interesting too. Stop at historic Ocean Springs and visit the neat shops and restaurants on Washington. Visit a casino or two in Biloxi. Enjoy your trip.

+1 for Mobile and the Gulf Coast. More to see and do there than in Montgomery, IMO.
