We are from the midwest and have to take vacation from Oct-Apr. We would love to go to Alaska. We love wildlife watching, nature, & hiking. We have been to several NP's in Oct, and loved missing the crowds, even tho somethings were closed. Which would be better, the first of Oct, or end of Apr? Any suggestions?

I really like to make positive posts, but neither October or April are good times to visit Alaska, with the exception of the Southeast, which has much milder weather than the rest of the state. However, it isn't the main tourist season, so many of the attractions, shops and restaurants won't be open/running if you came during either of those months. For most of the state, the tourist season runs from mid-May to end of September at the latest. Both April and October are pretty wintery, especially here in the Interior.

All that said, you could come up here - you would miss the whales, as they are in Hawaii then. Depending on exactly when, you might miss the bears as well, as they would be in their dens. But you could see plenty of other wildlife . . . hotel rates are cheaper, but weather would be very unpredictable. Hope that helps some.

I would pick the end of April. The days will be getting longer, moose with calves are alongside the road more and some places will be starting to get ready for summer that I'm sure would be very happy to see some early vistors. If you could wait for a couple weeks into May would be even better.

Have fun planning!
