"TOP 10" Recommended Things to See & Do in Alaska

There are so many topics to choose from that I'm having a really hard time narrowing down my choices of things to see and do SO I figured I'd ask what are the "TOP 10" of Alaska?

For those that live in or frequently visit, for an outdoorsy person who loves to Hike and LOVES the water, what are your top recommendations?

To be even more specific, let's narrow it down to 4 cities: Anchorage (start and end point), Seward, Fairbanks & Valdez with only 8 days to travel.

Maybe there are too many things to list but any info would be appreciated.

Limit it to 10 things? Oh, wow, that's a tough assignment!

Well, these would be MY top 10, but it still leaves things out I really enjoyed doing, so I'm sure lots of other people will be chiming in with more. Also, I haven't been to Valdez yet (next year), so that's why it's not on my list.

SewardKenai Fjords wildlife cruise, Exit Glacier, SeaLife Center

Fairbanks – U. of A. Museum, Riverboat Discovery, Gold Dredge No. 8

The drive from Seward to Portage: Beluga Point, Wildlife Conservation Center

Denali- busing into the park and seeing Mt. McKinley.

Glacier cruise out of Whittier.

Valdez - kayaking to Columbia Glacir

Fairbanks - hikes to China Dome and Granite Tors

Seward - Kenai Fjords National Park (9 hour cruise)

Anchorage - hikes to Wolverine Peak and Williwaw Lakes

Denali National Park - shuttle to the park and then hiking as far as you want and anywhere you want

Homer - bear watching day trip (for us always with Emerald Air)

1. Bear Safari with Bald Mountain Air, Homer, AK and overnight at Ocean House Inn

2. Salmon fishing, Cooper Landing, when in season, or King Salmon in Talkeetna, when in season

3. Kenai Fjord National Park Tour, and walk to Exit Glacier, Seward, AK

4. Sea Kayaking with Seaside Adventures, Homer, AK

5. Day trip bus to Wonder Lake, Denali National Park

6. Day trip flight to Barrow, AK

7. Flight around Mt. McKinley, Talkeenta

8. White Water Rafting, Six Mile Creek, need to be in shape.

9. Visit to Fairbanks

10. Inside passage cruise from Vancouver to Seward, or vice versa.

I'd rate the bear safari with Bald Mountain Air as the number 1 activity, and a day trip to Barrow I rate as number 2. All other 8 recommendations are not ranked in order.

I'll just name my favorite areas in this part of the state - someday you need to see the southeast.

Glenn Hwy area near the Matanuska glacier

Hatcher Pass

and last but not least, Denali National Park.

If you really love the water, I would not miss Homer or Seward, as these are some of the nicest ocean towns in the state (other than the SE). You can also do a great raft trip here in Denali Park. :)

With only 8 days, if it were I, I would chose Seward & Denali only & spots in between.

Stop along Turnagain Arm just south of Anchorage at McHugh Creek Picnic Area & Trailhead to hike the Turnagain Arm Trail south. Watch for bore tides & belugas from the awesome trail along the inlet.

Go to Seward. Go on Kenai Fjords tour & hike to Exit Glacier. Climb Mt. Marathon for the view!

Stop in Girdwood to hike in the old growth rainforest of Winner Creek Trail; the trailhead is out Alyeska Hotel (formerly known as Prince!)

Then I would spend a full 3 days hiking in Denali. Get Ike Waits book Hiking Denali as a guide. Use the camper bus when possible & ask the drivers to drop you at chosen hiking spots.

Denali shuttle bus trip to wonder lake for great scenery and longer chance at wildlife viewing. shorter Denali shuttle bus trip with time to get off the bus and hike. Whitewater rafting with Denali Outdoor Center.

Talkeetna - flightseeing trip of Mt Mckinley.

Fairbanks - tour of Large animal research center, museum at University of Alaska.

Chickaloon (Glenn Highway) - a must do 3 hour ice trekking hike with micaguides.com or novalaska.

Valdez - kayaking with Anadyr

Seward or Whittier - day cruise for wildlife/glaciers

Seward - Alaska Sealife Center, kayaking

Palmer - very scenic drive down Hatcher's Pass road to Independence Mine.

With 8 days, I guess I'd just stick with the Kenai Penninsula areas like Seward and Homer, Anchorage, and definately Denali Park.
