Trip Report May 28 -June 10th

What a amazing journey we had!!

May 28th Arrived in Anchorage at 1:30 Picked up car rental (at Airport) and headed down to Seward stopping at Potter's Marsh, McHugh Creek, Beluga Point, Windy Point, and other pull offs. It was a beautiful ride, cloudy but no rain. We arrived in Seward around 7pm and first stop was Safeway for supplies. We checked into the Hotel Seward and Had dinner in the Hotel at Gene's Place! We had fresh Salmon caught just 3 hours before. It was so Delicious. Noting like Atlantic salmon. The Food , service and staff at the Hotel Seward were great. We wanted to reserve a Water Taxi for the next day and Wes, The fishing charter guide from the Hotel arranged it for us with Seward Water Taxi. Wes was telling us about the Weir at Bears Creek where we could see Salmon jumping and instead of giving us directions took us for a ride to it at 10:pm that night. when we returned we stopped in the Yukon Bar for a couple of cold ones then called it a night!

May 29th. Breakfast in our room (We buy cereal and fruit for our breakfast's ).Went down to the south dock to meet our Water Taxi at 10am. Louie the owner was great and very informative. He took us out to Caines Head . We hiked up to Fort McGilvray were we had a picnic lunch. It was indeed very interesting and such beautiful views. We did some rock hounding and sun bathing on south beach waiting for Louie to return at 3PM. It was a sunny day in the 70's. At 4pm we drove up to Exit Glacier and walked the trails. On the way back we stopped at the Pit Bar for a cold one where we met a few locals who told us great stories about the area. Then Back to the hotel to change for Dinner . We ate at Christo's Palace. It reminded me of a greek diner. It had a little bit of every cuisine. The food was very good . After dinner we want to the Yukon Bar where there was a live country acoustic guitar player.

May 30th. Cereal & fruit for breakfast. Checked out of hotel around 10am heading for Girdwood. We stopped at the Weir to see the Salmon again. We went to Portage Valley where we stopped at the visitors center, walked along the lake, We walked the trail to Bryon Glacier where we had lots of fun playing on the snow and a picnic lunch. We also stopped at Explorer glacier and Alder's pond .We arrived at the Alyeska Resort at 5pm. I loved the Valet parking :). The staff were very helpful. Since it was a clear sunny day we decided to give the 7 Glacier a try for dinner. The Tram ride up was fun with beautiful views of Turnagain Arm. Although the food was overpriced (especially the steak) the food and service was very good. After dinner we walked around the grounds for awhile, had a cocktail at the lounge then turned in early.

May 31st. Cereal & fruit breakfast. Needed to be at the Anton Anderson Memorial Tunnel by 10:30. I loved driving through the tunnel. We took the Phillips 26 Glacier at 12:30pm. The fish and chips lunch was good and the glaciers were amazing. We got to see Surprise Glacier calve. What a BOOM!!. Weather held out for us. Cloudy but no rain. We enjoyed the tour but will add that the boat was only 1/3 full. If it was at full capacity (342 people) you would be packed like sardines. On the way back to the Alyeska we stopped at Jack Sprats in Girdwood for dinner. This was my least favorite place of the trip. The food was okay and overpriced. Service was terrible. After dinner went back to hotel had a cocktail in the lounge and called it a early night.

June 1st. Cereal & fruit Breakfast. Checked out of Alyeska at 12pm

Back through the Anton Anderson Tunnel. We had some time to kill in Whittier before ferry left at 4pm. We had lunch at a little stand near ferry. We drove the whole town and stopped at the Whittier Museum. The Alaskan Marine ferry was wonderful. It rained on and off. I would definitely recommend experiencing it. We arrived in Cordova At 7:15 and checked into the Reluctant Fisherman. We had a little balcony overlooking the dock . We walked into town to grocery store for supplies. Dinner at the Reluctant Fisherman was very good!

June 2nd. Cereal & Fruit breakfast on balcony. Drove out to Child's Glacier and Million dollar bridge! Road was in great condition and the views were beautiful. Picnic lunch at the Glacier. Drove over the million dollar bridge where we walked along the Cooper river.Wonderful views of Miles Glacier. Returned to hotel and changed for dinner. Went to the Alaskan Bar! What a great old place. The locals were wonderful. When they learned it was our honeymoon they bought us drinks and one couple gave us 3 jars of freshly smoked salmon to bring home. We had the fish and chips for dinner. It was our favorite place to hang out on our trip.

June3rd. Cerael & fruit breakfast. 8am ferry to Valdeez. Arrived in Valdeez at ll:15am. Stopped at Safeway for supplies. Went to the old Valdeez town site where we saw a couple of American Bald Eagles. The ride out of Valdeez was beautiful. Many stops along Keystone Canyon to take pictures of the many waterfalls. Thompson pass was in a cloud you could not see anything. Drove 2mph. It was scary. Stopped at Worthington Glacier and walked the trails. Then it was on to McCarthy! McCarthy Road was amazing. It was in excellent condition (better than the streets in NYC) It took 2hrs and 15 minutes to dive the 60 miles. As soon as you pass though the towering rocks at the entrance to the road it's as if you stepped back it time. We arrived at 6:30pm walked out bags across the foot bridge and the van from Ma Johnson's was waiting for us. Ma Johnson's was great! No locks on door, no electrical outlets in room and shared baths. Impeccably clean, Ma Johnson's is a experience not to be missed.. We had the 4 course dinner at the lodge which was very good. After dinner cocktails at the Golden Saloon.

June 4th. Potato Head Burrito for breakfast at the Potato Head. It was excellent! 9:30am shuttle to Kennicott. Hiked the trail to Root glacier. Had picnic lunch at jumbo creek. Took the 1:30pm tour of the Mill. It was incredible! Back to McCarthy around 6:30pm. Had casual dinner at the Golden Saloon which was good. Walked around town and down to the river for a hour then back to the saloon for cocktails.

June 5th.10am. Copper Oar Nizina Canyon Raft and Flightsee Wilderness Day Trip. What a great day. Our guides were funny and very knowledgeable. They provided a lunch fit for a queen and king.

The flightsee was amazing and a must do while in Wrangell St.Elias National Park. Back at MaJohnson's by 6pm. 4 course dinner at the Lodge again it was very good (portions are small). Cocktails at the Golden Saloon and called it another night.

June 6th. Potato Head Burrito for breakfast again YUMMY!. Left McCarthy's around 10am for our journey back to civilization! The ride from Chitina to Glenallen was beautiful. Stopped at Liberty falls and the many photo pull outs for Mt. Wrangell. Had a picnic lunch along the way. Stopped in Glennallen for supplies then started out drive along Glenn Highway. We arrived at Sheep Mountain Lodge around 6pm. We checked in but when we entered our room it smelled badly of paint. The owners were wonderful. They arranged lodging for us 3miles up the road at Tundra Rose Cabins and gave us a 2 or 1 Dinner at Sheep Mountain. The food was very good! We were really looking forward to our stay at Sheep Mountain and using the hot tub but to our surprise the cabin (glacier view) at Tundra Rose was beautiful. It felt like I was in my own home. Coleen the owner was wonderful and I wish we could have stayed a second night .

June 7th. cereal & fruit breakfast on our private deck overlooking Matanuska Glacier. On the road at 9am. The Glenn Highway was our favorite road. Stopped in Wasilla for supplies and started our journey up Parks highway. We were very lucky Mt. McKinley was out and we stopped at a pull off and had a picnic lunch. We arrived at Denali's Crows Nest at 7pm. Crooked stairs, crooked cabins,Hot tub and the best staff ever. It's not for everyone but we loved the Crow's nest. Dinner at the Overlook was very good . Dirty Martini's were excellent. Soaked in the Hot tub and called it a night.

June 8th. Cereal & fruit breakfast 7am Shuttle bus to Eielson Visitors Center. All I can say is Thank you to this forum for insisting on taking the shuttle bus. It was the most incredible journey I have ever been on!! Not only was the mountain out, we saw a lynx, moose, caribou, grizzly , Dall sheep and a Ptarmigan. So glad we went early. By the time we got to the visitors the mountain was covered in clouds. Arrived back at hotel at 3:30. Had

a soak in the hot tub. Dinner at the Overlook 1 1/2lb Alaskan King crab. YUMMY.. Took a walk down to Glitter Gulch for a Ice cream. Cocktail at the Overlook, Soak in the hot tub.

June 9th. Cereal & fruit breakfast. On the road 9am. Stopped at Talkeetna for lunch at Mile High Pizza. and coffee and sweets at the Road house. Both were excellent. Took a walk down by the river and collected some rock. Next stop Independence Mines! We walked the entire site . We were there for a couple of hours. We arrived at Knik River Lodge around 7pm. What a wonderful property. We had dinner at 8pm in the Yurt! Food was excellent. Our favorite place to eat.

June10th.Breakfast brought to our cabin at 8am. 10am -2PM Knik Glacier jet boat tour.. This was my favorite! If you want to be close up and intimate with a glacier and icebergs this is the tour to take. Picnic lunch at Earthquake park in Anchorage. Watch some motor cross and talked with parents at Kincaid Park. Also walked along the cliffs and up to the top of the Sand dune. Dinner at Solace Cafe was good. 8:30pm headed to airport for return flight home.

Great report. Thanks for sharing.

I took the 7am camper bus at Denali to Wonder Lake the same day you took your shuttle. We missed the lynx :-(. But otherwise, it was a great trip. Yes, too bad the Mountain clouded up after about mile 18. Never saw the entire Mountain again until we left on June 11th.

What did the water taxi cost from Seward to Caines Head and back, and how many people were on it?

"What did the water taxi cost from Seward to Caines Head and back, and how many people were on it?"

The water Taxi was $54 a person round trip. There were 6 going out. We were dropped off at Caines Head. The other 4 were going to Aialik Bay. On the way back it was just us.
